Why are Americans averse to individually pay for health insurance, yet open to allowing the gov't pay for it

I don't want the government to have anything to do with my health insurance. I would say your questions is pretty broad lumping all Americans into one category like that. I for one do not think it is the governments job to bail me out of everything and take care of the bills I deem to expensive to pay myself.

Because people don't seem to realize that the government IS the people, except highly inefficient and ten times more expensive.

People complain about how expensive health insurance is, but I can assure you it will look like a real bargain when the government starts taking 50% (or more) of your income in taxes to pay for the pathetic level of care we can all be assured if we put the government in charge of it.

Look, we all make choices. I'm a diabetic and I can't go without health insurance. It's so important to me that, when I had to make some hard choices, I was literally homeless (and living at the YWCA) so that I could afford to pay for my health insurance. I'm sure that seems like an insane choice to a lot of people, but I don't have ANYTHING if I don't have my health. Then I couldn't even work, or function.

I don't think most Americans are adverse to paying individually for health insurance. Most of them would love to have an individual health insurance plan - but they can't afford to pay for it! The prices that insurance companies are charging for individual plans are outrageous, especially for a family plan. I don't believe that most people want the government to pay for plans for them, but they do want the government to ensure that there are affordable insurance plans out there for them to purchase.

Health insurance is very expensive and if not covered by your employer many Americans cannot afford it. The majority of developed countries in the world offer basic healthcare to all citizens, why shouldn't the U.S.

The reality is that health insurance, on an individual or family basis, is affordable for the vast majority of people. The problem most often is that we have gotten used to nearly all expenses relating to our health being covered by an insurance policy, and this is unrealistic. We have no incentive to get healthy, and stay healthy, realizing that if we do get sick we just pay a few hundred dollars out of pocket.
The answer is a high deductible Health Savings Account qualified plan that still covers preventive care such as physicals without having to meet the deductible.
HSA's force us to become consumers, to watch how the money is spent relating to our health. HSA's also give us the incentive to stay healthy and save, both money and taxes.
Having a vested interest in our health, much like we do in our homes, is an answer to the problems we face.
We have a weight issue in this country. Imagine how many fewer trips to the doctors and hospitals if the majority were simply at an average weight. Is this the cure-all answer to the national healthcare problem, no. Would being more accountable when it comes to our own health help in a big way, you bet.
Insurance is designed to help those in need, to spread the risk, to pay for the unexpected. It was never designed to pay for self-inflicted conditions.

I don't have the money to pay for it.

Cause it's very very expensive here and most Americans don't have 800+ per month to spend on health insurance that has a 500 ded and pays 80/20.

Because we are forced to pay for anything and everything. We are taxed for just about everything. We pay for every plate, spoon, fork, and toilet seat, vacation, trip here and there, that the government deems "necessary". We pay for all of that. Don't you think that the government should be responsible to make sure we are in good health so that we can work, earn money and pay our taxes so that they can maintain the quality of life we have given them??
