I would agree with some of these answers... but we as people have to stop and take some responsibility. Here is a situation: A 19 year old female thinks she may be pregnant, she is only 3 days late. She calls her clinic and they can't see her for a month (ob gyn's tend to take a while). What is this young ladies idea... Go to the ER and get a pregnancy test. If her policy does not have a restriction (chosen my them employer) that states non emergency medical is not covered, or has a max, the insurance company paid out $300.00 for a test that she could have bought at the store for $10.00. Had she went to her dr or a different dr (walk in clinics are great in time of need) It would have cost them a whole $50.00. Now how many people go to the ER under a non emergency condition... In turn all rates go up. Add that to the law suits, ignorance and greedy people, and we have high rates.

I agree with captain skillet and would like to add that due to Copays for Dr. Visits and prescription drugs, most patients don't care what things cost. This takes the normal economic pressures of supply and demand out of the equation. Most people with insurance don't ask what things cost or do comparison shopping.

Because people keep sueing doctors for medical malpractice which makes medical insurance high which makes doctor costs high which makes insurance rates high. There.

Because you are covering a portion of the unhealthy's health care, especially if you have group coverage.
asking-a-question
1) you help pay for those who can't or won't - not that you have a choice not to
2) fraud
3) your health
Captain Skillet
Health insurance rates are high because health bills are high. Health bills are high because doctors and hospitals pay really high insurance. They pay really high insurance because people sue them so much. People sue doctors and hospitals so much because people have gotten away with it in the past. People have gotten away with it because of the rediculous judicial system in most states. We have a rediculous judicial system because nothing has been done about it.
That help?

Simple answer... because they can be.

It is a natural chain of events with an exhausting answer. 1. Medical care is so high so naturally the insurance has to be higher to make money. Medical care is high due to high malpractice insurance the doctors are reqwuired to carry, research and development of drugs and medical equipment etc.
2. Insurance fraud also plays a role in the high cost of medical insurance
