Why are insurance companies so corrupt and allowed to do what they do?
I recently wanted to get a better rate for my house insurance because my boyfriend and I were on the same policy from before and he had a repo that raised our rate almost 300 bucks (even after 14 years with the same company and not one claim), rediculious. I've been calling around and it seems each company has a reason to quote a high rate or refuse coverage. 1 says we have to many cars on our property (all are registered and currently insured elsewhere), 2 says we have too many chihuahuas and will not insure us, 3 says our above ground pool is a danger (even though it is under lock and key, 4 says they won't insure me as a stay at home caregiver to a disabled parent. What can I do without being screwed. I have owned homes for 18 years now and never once had a claim yet my rates continues to sore, why, why, why???

Thanks mbrcatz,
Our dogs are ours and not breaders or rescues, they are ours and we love all and they are all fixed. Your right on the pool and a great observation, the cars are all used, all run, we only drive two at any 1 time so I still don't see your point there. I have cared for my mom since age eight and it is not a business at all it is my life.

Insurance rates are based not only on previous claims, but on the risk you present. Evidently, your lifestyle (cars and chihuahuas) present risks that they feel make you a poor risk, despite a history of no claims.

My husband and I have had the same problem. 8 years in our home, not 1 single claim, and the insurance goes up and up!!!!

We found an underwriter in Texas that saved us. I think they cover 47 states. They are a commercial and residential auto insurance company but also do home owners insurance.

Long story short we ended up insuring our home and vehicles with them. We live in Colorado.

I agree with you about insurance companies being corrupt. If Landa can't help you try Farmers. They are a good company too.

They aren't corrupt. Just because you can't get "low risk" rates, because you're high risk, doesn't mean they are corrupt.

Just like, a 16 year old with a Mustang, can't get the same CAR insurance rates that you have.

Rates are going up, because CLAIMS are going up. Not yours, maybe, but overall. I'm sure you've heard of several hurricanes and wildfires in the past few years? Insurance is all about SHARING LOSSES with other people. That's why you can get $150,000 of coverage for $500.

MOST companies, won't put non-married people on the same policy - so whoever you had before, they were doing a FAVOR for you. Sort of.

I have no idea how many cars you have. But having more than two, for more than two people, is a "red flag" that you've got more than the declared number of people living there. Having more than a handful of chihuahuas is a "red flag" that you have a business in the home - breeding dogs - or that you take in rescues - who have "issues" and are more likely to bite.

That above ground pool IS a danger - a flooding danger, to any neighbors downstream from you, if the pool bursts. It's not only about drowning, it's about water damage to others. And being a caregiver is a BUSINESS. So if you have a disabled parent living in your home, and they are PAYING you for care/upkeep/living expenses, you are actually running a business out of your home, LEGALLY. Just as if you were caring for a NONRELATED person.

Sorry. Not what you wanted to hear, I'm sure, but you are describing a high risk situation, on SEVERAL fronts.

**well, it's great you're still caring for your mom. BUT, if, for example, you have a sibling who gets mad at what you're doing, she can sue you, for anything related to your caring for your mom in your home. That's still a business exposure. I don't know how many dogs or cars you have. But some areas, like where I live, you can legally only have four (yep, I have friends with a lot more). Anyway. I was just trying to show you the insurance company's perspective.**

can quoting a higher than desired price be termed as corruption. giving false statements; misleading; hiding facts; offering one and providing another; etc may be termed as corrupt. insurance companies are not corrupt to the best of my understanding. however, the agents resort to several unfair practices. please have quotation from several agents; tabulate and compare before deciding.
