rubberduckehs | Why are the premiums for Health Insurance different? |
I want to apply for Blue Cross Blue Shield in Chicago 60616, and I've never applied for health insurance myself, so I want to know what the difference in premiums mean,coinsurance/deductible, and the "lifetime benefits", does that mean they will pay up to that much in a lifetime? I am going for a temporary plan there. Thanks =)
If the link would help, here it is: https://services.hscil.com/il/eapp/wxpm1653.pl?source=WEBIL00100# |

Generally, the higher the deductibles and co-insurance that you pay, the lower the premium. But age, health and medical history also factor in. Deductible is the amount you pay for covered services before the insurance picks up their portion. Co-insurance is the percentage you pay until you meet the out of pocket max and your insurance then pays at 100%. Lifetime max is just that-the maximum the insurance will pay over the lifetime of the policy. This is usually the discounted rate that they pay the providers, not the actual billed amounts.
I would suggest that you find a local independant agent in your area and let him/her answer your questions. That way you will get a policy that meets both your medical and financial needs. |

Deductible is the amount you pay first before the plan kicks in. Higher deductible = lower cost to you since you'll pick up more of the bill.
Coinsurance is the rate at which you and the insurance company will share the costs after the deductible is met...50/50 (you pay 50% of the bills) is cheaper than 80/20 (you pay 20% of the bills)
If it's temporary coverage just do the math and make sure you're not saving only $10 to go for a deductible that's $500 hgher. Hopefully that makes sense.

Premiums are different because the health plans are different.
The better the benefits, the higher your premiums are going to be.
Most plans have a lifetime maximum, and that means that is the total amount the plan will pay. |

Premiums are different because the coverages are different.
You should really use a local agent, who can take the half hour to sit down with you and explain all the options. |

The premiums differ because each type of policy offers something different. A coinsurance, means that the insurance company will pay a portion of a bill and you will have a portion to pay also (For example they pay 80%, and you pay 20%). A deductible is something that you will have to pay first before the insurance company pays anything (this varies based on the policy you sign up for). The other two ladies were right, to find out what's best for your budget and needs, it's best to speak with a local agent. They can go over the different types of polices and help you see the advantages and disadvantages of each until you find one you like. |
