I know this may sound silly but i only know what I do from my limited perspective. Im my state we have medicaid and health plus for low income families. Can someone explain to me why is it that with these programs, there are still uninsured Americans??? |

~~There are people who do not fall low enough in the lower income levels to qualify for state aid, but still can not afford private coverage. There are working people who do not have an employer who can offer health insurance, and they can't afford or qualify for private health insurance.
If anyone has a hint of a health problem then they are quickly dis-qualified for health insurance, or the rates or so high they can't afford the premium.
When you are young and healthy, insurance premiums can be very affordable. Once you hit over the age of 40, then the rates jump dramatically and continue to climb every year. That is if someone who is over 40 is lucky enough to never had any type of past health history problem which knock them out of coverage.
I know a young girl who can't find coverage just because she took an anti-depressant for a couple of years. For some reason I don't understand she keeps getting rejected for coverage because of this medication.
Health coverage is now only for extremely healthy people, or very wealthy. The only hope most people have is to get a group coverage through an employer. Unfortunately, these companies are becoming fewer and hard to come by, because of the ridiculous premiums that must be paid by the employers also.
This is a very important issue, and just one of a few great reasons to vote for Obama. He is ready to remedy this situation.

Lots of people make too much to qualify for state aid but do not make enough to be able to afford health insurance on their own and their employers do not provide it. |

At my work, a single person pays about $7,000/yr. for insurance and families pay about $14,000 year. The average employee makes about $70,000. I know that's not a bad salary, but many of the families have a hard time coming up with the $1000+/monthly payment. They can decline the company insurance, but they'd have to find an individual plan and often those don't cover a lot of things. (I looked into it when I got my job.) We live in an area where the cost of living is high. My small 2-bedroom apartment is $2000/month. I do okay because I'm not married and am one of the higher paid employees, but I know a lot of my co-workers fret over their insurance. I can't imagine what it's like for low income people. Also, when you try to get your own insurance, companies often deny claims if they think they can qualify an illness as pre-existing. Health care in the US is all about money and has little to do with health. |

The numbers of uninsured are greatly exaggerated. In addition, some people without health insurance are uninsured by choice. They have the money, but don't want to spend it (especially the young and healthy). There are many who are proponents of national healthcare , but I don't think they are aware that in countries with national health programs , benefits are often rationed. For example, in the UK there are reports of women diagnosed with breast cancer who can't get treatments for months and dirty, understaffed hospitals. There is a bill before parliament now to allow people to pay for their own cancer medication if it's not covered. They have to be given permission to pay for their own medication! Our system is far from perfect, but at least the government can't decide who lives and who dies. |

Because medicaid and health plus have strict income requirements - if you make $5 more a year than is allowed, you're out of luck. To privately buy health insurance is near impossible because insurers don't want to sell to individuals for fear of their defaulting on premium payments. Then you have people like my parents - my dad is self-employed and my mom is an adjunct college professor. They make too much to qualify for state subsidized coverage (and because NY mandates so much crap - premiums are thru the roof) but not so much that they don't feel the sting of paying their premiums once a month. |

Well, half the uninsured people here in the USA, about 22,000,000 of them, are actually here ILLEGALLY. They are either trying to stay under the radar, or flat out aren't able, to get health insurance due to their legal status in this country.
Half of the remainder, are the 20 - 40 set, the "I"m healthy and don't want to waste $300 a month on insurance that I'm never going to "make" any money off of". Of course, once something DOES go wrong, then it's the "why won't those big mean insurance companies insure me for $300 a month and pay out my $100,000 bills?"
The other half, about 12,000,000, were uninsured when something went wrong, and now the insurance companies don't want to insure them. They make too much money for welfare health insurance.
**As Debi above alluded to, the time to buy health insurance, is when you are HEALTHY. It's kind of like the lottery - you can't buy the ticket, AFTER the numbers come up. It's too late.** |

There are 2 reasons people typically don't have insruance:
1) They live in their little life bubble saying "I'm healthy now, it will never happen to me!" and pay no attention to statistics or anything like that.
2) They blindly have complete faith in the 'system' and government thinking "They care about the people. They won't let me fall!"
The other reason would be that they are absolutely selfish and don't care that their family will have to sell house and home to take care of them all due to their lack of responsible planning (that's mainly in the case of life insurance though "What do I care...I won't be here anyway!")
And cost is not the problem here. If a person can't afford the premium, how are they going to afford the entire amount when it's thrown at them in one lump sum. Any person that I've met with that is actually logical will find a way to make insurance work into their budget. |

Insurance of the kind you address is not required. No emergency room is allowed to turn away patients. They cannot even turn away an indigent.
Many people enjoy spending money on video games instead of insurance. It is a value choice. Those people (usually young) believe it is more important to enjoy a video game and receive satisfaction, instead of paying for insurance to have protection.
Those people gamble.
We all make decision in life. We all earn the consequences of our decisions. |
