The information which you input goes straight into the mainframe, meaning that the Insurer does not have to pay anybody to type in your details, saving time and wages. You will probably make your payment online as well. The saving is then passed on to you, the consumer. |

Its less work for them, less paperwork to fill in, less money spent on phone calls. you get a discount for convience, insurance companies would have to input data into the computer if applied through phone or in person. Do it online that job is already done! |

in a nutshell, selling insurance online is cheaper for companies. if you call a call centre and speak to someone it costs the company more money in terms of man hours(due to expensive labour costs).
By giving online discounts the company is promoting the use of its web site, once enough people use their web site the company will be able to cut down on call centre staff hence cutting costs. So you pay less but the company still makes the same amount of profit as they don't need as many call centre staff.

The main reason is of cause they have to employ less people.
but buying online tells them more about you.
they get an IP address - They know where you was when you brought (priceless info for stopping scams)
They upload cookies to your computer which tells them even more information of how you entered the site how you used there sites what you clicked on etc.
They have chance to cross sell easier with pop-ups and adds.
