Why can't my Husband get approved for Health Insurance when I am the pregnant one?
I am covered by my job. He got denied because I am 5 1/2 months pregnant? Additional Details nope I have my own coverage...he just didn't like his old coverage and he wanted something else. he is honestly 100% healthy. Nothing other than the fact that I am pregnant was the reason for denying him...I plan on staying on my insurance..its free fr my job!!
The simple answer to your question: On an individual policy the insurance company can be held liable for the health care costs of the child at birth should it go to court. For this reason they will not write a new policy on the father of an unborn child in most if not all states.
Insuranceman
A lot of insurance companies would be hesitant to start a new policy due to State mandates about coverage for newly born dependents. IF something were wrong with the baby and your husband elected to have the baby added to HIS policy, the company would be obligated to cover the new borne.
When is the baby due? If he has found something that he likes that he thinks is better coverages or same for less, just have him wait until AFTER the baby is born.
Good luck and I hope this helps!

No group coverage can deny coverage. Open enrollment is the only time he can apply unless there was a qualifying event. Perhaps this was the reason he was denied. You need to talk to your HR department and bring them the denial you received so that they can explain it to you or talk to the insurance administrator.
Jenny Kim
That sounds very odd. Talk to your HR department or benefits administrator about that one.

No one gets denied because of someone else! He was obviously applying for a family plan or filled out the application wrong. If this was done through his company...Someone messed up bad. It is not legal for a company to offer it's employee's an insurance plan and not approve everyone who applies. If this was done independently and he was denied and he and the agent are positive that it was just him he was trying to cover then they found a terminal illness after they did the blood tests. Reasons for not getting covered. NO income, Terminal illness, Hard drugs, Over 65. pre existing conditions are not covered like a woman who gets health insurance after she is pregnant. They will insure you but they won't cover anything pregnancy related. If a man applies for health insurance and they won't cover him because his wife is five months pregnant it will be the first time in the history of insurance. Are you sure that he was not trying to get a family plan?! They don't cover children that are not born yet ! sounds like the agent may not know how to sell insurance very well. There is no insurance agency in the world that would refuse your money if you are healthy under 65 and don't do hard drugs. I have never even heard of an insurance company giving a damn about anyone other than the people they insure. I know plenty of pregnant women and I am insurable! Are you sure you are not talking about life insurance with your unborn child as a benneficiary. People don't do business with people who are not born yet.

Must be more to this story. Are you trying to add him on your policy or is he trying to get coverage elsewhere?
Scooter girl
I would assume that he waived coverage at the beginning when he was eligible to go on your plan. To go on your plan at this point he would:
A. need a qualifying event - he lost his coverage through his employer. Since you stated that he didn't lose his coverage he just decided yours was better, that is not a qualifying event.
B. He would need to wait for open enrollment which is usually the month before the policy renewal.
I don't think the reason could be that you are pregnant since the baby can be covered as soon as he/she is born.
Insurance companies have these guidelines so that people don't waive coverage while they are healthy and then get on the policy when a health condition appears. If that was the case everyone would waive coverage until they actually needed it.
