Why do I have to pay for my health insurance when I was hurt at work?
I was injured at work on May 5, 2007. I have been out of work since then collecting workers comp. I recieved a letter in the mail saying if I dont repay the past insurance expenses it will be cancelled. I dont really care about myself but I have four little girls. I'm divorced and it is court ordered that I keep health insurance on them, I'm about 1500 dollars behind. What can I do?

Well, your employer has no obligation to pay your health insurance premium after your terminated, or even if you're on leave. You still have to pay it. His workers comp insurance will keep paying for the medical related to your injury, however.

You've got a tough choice. Pay the premiums, or get cancelled. I have no idea where you're going to scrape up $1500.

If it gets cancelled, you can try to get your kids signed onto your state Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP). The income guidelines are more lenient than regular welfare (Medicaid) insurance.

If you were injured on the job, workers' comp pays YOUR medical expenses and a lost wage allowance for the injury. It does NOT pay the premium for your normal health insurance that is still your responsibility.

You need to pay your health insurance premium, your employer has no obligation to pay it when you off on work comp. You are lucky your employer is still paying your insurance as in many states your employer is under no obligation to hold your job. So your best bet is to get back to work ASAP even if on light duty, or you may not have a job to return to when you are released to full duty.

Health ins premiums are many times paid based on hours worked.
If you haven't worked any hours, their obligation ends.

Have you not been paying the premiums since you've been off work? You have to keep paying into your health insurance if you wish to keep it. Workmen's Comp is only going to cover your injury at work--not your children or you if you were to get sick from an illness.

As for what you can do...you have to pay the $1500 to keep it.
