Brooke K | Why do a lot of health insurance plans through your parents employers cut you off at 25 yrs old? |
I'm a full time student and turned 25 in September. I guess once September ended I'm no longer covered under my dad's health insurance. I was surprised because I at least thought I had the semester to finish off since it was that way with my friend. But anyways, why do a lot of companies cut you off by then? I know a lot of people at that age are done with college, but there are still plenty who aren't. I'm still an undergrad, but what about the ones that are going to medical school, dental school, etc, that aren't even done with college until there late 20s if they went right out of high school? 25 is still young, and it's still hard to afford for most people at that age. Also, I heard about student insurance. Do most college have that for students to check into? |

Because you need to grow up and be on your own at some time. 25 years is enough to rely on mommy and daddy. |

Because most companies believe you should be out and supporting yourself by then. So if you continue to go to school for the rest of your life, are you saying they should still carry you on the policy? Check for student insurance at the registration office or where ever. |

Because if the insurance co didn't cut off adult children, they'd stay on the policy until they could collect medicare.
Time for your policy. |

In my state it's the law, not the insurance companies decision.
Student insurance is a limited benefit type of policy that I think is a ripoff (generally). For less money you can buy an individual policy that you own and has better coverage. The only advantage of a student policy is it is usually not subject to underwriting.

Some cut you off well before 25. Check to see if your school offers a student group plan. If not, you'll need to look into an individual health plan. |

If you are in college, you may want to check out health insurance programs that are written through your school. United Healthcare has a plan available at many US schools. These student injury and illness plans provide wide ranging coverage and are designed to be affordable for college students. To check if your school is participating, go to www.UHCSR.com and enter your school name in the search box. You might also be interested in joining the American College Student Association (ACSA), a national organization for college students. They have lots of member benefits, including student health insurance. Their membership fee is affordable. |

Some policies cease coverage at 18, 19, or 21. It's basically up to your parent's employer - riders that extend dependent coverage are expensive, and employers can generally choose when dependent coverage ceases.
Exceptions are usually made for disabled or terminally ill dependents.
Many states will extend Medicaid or other public benefits to people without coverage, including college students - and many health insurers will require physicians in their provider networks to accept Medicaid, Medicare, or public benefits from patients (for a number of reasons).
If your college doesn't have some sort of health plan, it may only require a few minutes at your county's services office to secure health coverage. Well worth an hour or two (at most) of your time !!

Because they feel by 25, you should be able to support yourself.
Graduate students, and post graduate students, most of the time can get group coverage through their school, which also allows them to add spouses and kids.
There are a way lot of "professional students". College really only takes four years, for a Bachelor's degree. If you don't goof around, you should have a Bachelor's by 22. Some people even get it earlier.
Heck, we only live 70 years. If you're planning on spending almost half that in SCHOOL, it's a bit much, IMO. Or, plan B - work a full time job, do the school in the evenings. LOTS of people do that, while raising their OWN families.
I've never heard of a college that DIDN'T have a student health plan. Most of the time, though, it's not as good as a private plan.
