Will claims estimators charge more if insurance is paying? After all it's an estimate and they wouldn't need to know if insurance is paying until you decide to get the work done.

Well, they've got "deals" with some insurance companies, a pre-negotiated lower labor rate. So if one of the pre-negotiated companies is paying, they actually write the estimate up for a lower labor rate than if you pay yourself.
It's bulk buying . . . not fair, but done all the time. |

In general, they ask because they want to know if an adjuster will be reviewing their estimate to ensure that they aren't overcharging you. Insurance companies often clamp down on hourly rates, and use of new parts on older vehicles.
If you are paying the bill, they know that you won't know the going labor rate, and estimating standards such as included operations, etc. Chances are you will get taken. |

Auto shops now that they can get more money from a big insurance company than they can from an individual.
So yes, they will charge more to a faceless insurance company.
All the while, your premiums increase because the insurance companies have to pay out more money. |

Very simple... it's just like when you have health insurance. The company will bill higher for an auto repair because they know that the companies will "adjust" the cost (usually lower). The business also has to wait for payment on an insurance claim. When it's an out-of-pocket payment, the repair shop has flexability to work the price and gets paid immediately, reducing their overhead costs |

This may not answer your question but...
I went directly to the factory body shop who is the BEST, maybe not the least expensive, but the company who made your car should be the place to go. I had my car towed home and the claims adjuster came to my house and looked at what was needed to repair my car. I was hit and I was not at fault. Since my attorney didn't help me, I drove the car to Chevy and paid out of my pocket and I was reimbersed by the insurance company of the driver who hit me. |
