Why do insurance companys screw over their policy holders?

Additional Details
On November 10th my vehicle was totaled, the witnesses said the at fault car had to be going at least 80mph when it lost control, started to skid, over corrected and rear ended my car, spun there car around and hit my car again in the front. All of this took place in a 45 mph zone. You do not have to be a insurance adjuster to tell the car is a total loss. The other driver recieved the ticket. They have me in a rental that they are paying for, but since I have obtain legal counsel, there is no communication. They know my injurys because of the e-room and police report. It's going on 3 weeks now and no word yet on my car. Either insurance company has called to see if there is anything that can be done!

I really do not want to hear anymore about how slim the profit margins are. When insurance companys' can finance 1 and 2 hundred MILLION dollar projects, they can at least replace my car per our paid policy!

If you want to protect yourself and hire an attorney prepare to be punished

Wow why are you all so bitter about insurance companies. If you have a valid claim they pay. If they don't all you have to do is contact the Insurance Commissioner. I don't know what type of insurance company is screwing you over, but they probably have a good reason. The reason insurance premiums are going up everywhere is because of fraudulent claims. All you have to do is prove a loss and make sure that the policy you purchase you understand what you bought. If the policy does not cover what you need it to shame on you for not understanding it when you bought it. If you feel it does, take the appropriate steps to get your claim paid.

They don't. But people always want something they didn't pay for, and when they don't get it, they blame the other guy for not giving them a handout.

It's called, not being responsible for yourself, not taking the time to LEARN what you are doing, and not wanting to be bothered to read your own policy.

BTW, if you REALLY think insurance companies are a big ripoff, and never pay out on claims, and just hold onto the money to get rich, I hope you put YOUR MONEY WHERE YOUR MOUTH IS, and buy lots and lots and lots of insurance company stock.

Personally, I know how much insurance companies pay out, and how thin the profit margins are, and I would NEVER invest in insurance company stock. But if you REALLY believe they are that way, you'll buy tons.

Number one, they are in business to make a profit. To do that, they carefully speculate on how much damage will occur to a given policy owner based on high level math not unlike what you'd find used by professional gamblers. The better they control their risk, the better their profits. They do have to pay out for insured damages - that is what their service is all about. BUT... But, they must stay within the limits of their contractual obligations if their actuarial (statistical analysis) numbers are to mean anything about their future ability to pay for damages and produce a profit. People who choose activities or products to insure that cary poor risk assessments can expect high premiums. in the event of catastrophic regional damage - damage assessment will be within very tight levels of what is acceptable by the contract and what is not. Otherwise, the company could go broke and nobody will be able to get value from damage or from the company itself.

Hi, my name is Eunice Saunders and I am an Insurance Agent. Unfortunately everyone must have insurance and a lot of people like you resent that fact. Insurance is sadly miss-understood by most people. The concept of insurance is that we all pool our money together and if one of us has a loss we take care of you and put you back to the condition you were in before the loss. Insurance companies really do not make money on "insurance" most insurance companies operate with a loss each year. They make their money from the interest paid on the premium that you and I pay. All of the premium is placed in a pool account and the insurance company makes a profit on the interest paid to the account. I am sorry that you have had a bad experience with insurance and hope that you will find a good agent to help you to get the right kind of insurance for your needs in the future. Good Luck! Eunice

Screw over in what way? Why don't policy holders read insurance contracts?

cassee_ame
It sounds like you've had a recent experience you haven't told us about - I'm sorry you're feeling like you've been mistreated. I can tell you, though, that insurance companies can't just go around "screwing over" their policy holders.

First, insurance companies have to file with the state department of insurance; they file everything from rates to claims practices to underwriting guidelines. If the state finds out the company is in violation of its filings, they're subject to fines, law suits and dismissal from the state.

Second is that if you're dealing with some fly-by-the-night carrier trying to get the cheapest rate, you're a LOT more likely to have a bad experience. Dealing with a national level carrier will give you a lot more options, standardized practices and guidelines.

If you tried to have something covered that wasn't covered by the contract then you need to talk to your agent (if you have one) and make sure you read your insurance contracts. Ignorance of the contract is not a legal reason to have an uncovered claim paid out.

If you tried to commit insurance fraud, I say, on behalf of the rest of the folks reading through here, that I hope you get caught and go to jail. The cost alone of investigating fradulent claims adds a ton to everyone else's insurance premiums. The payouts, on top of the claims investigations, adds even more to the cost.

Insurance companies aren't in the business of giving away free money. Most of them are publicly traded and have to make a profit for their shareholders. To do this, insurers have to adhere to the letter of their contract. If you didn't purchase a coverage, they aren't going to pay you for it. They will pay you exactly what they owe you...not a penny more and not a penny less.

If you have a legitimate gripe and your carrier has truly tried to screw you over, contact your state's department of insurance.

Good luck!

the only difference between insurance companies and mafia protection is that the Government can tax the insurance companies. Insurance companies are in the business to take in money and are betting that they never have to pay off.
