Why do people who's unisured homes were damaged in the floods think they have the right to the same help as...
those with insurance?

Isn't the whole point of home insurance to help you in incidents like these?
Additional Details
(I'm talking about the recent floods that hit england, in case you were wondering)

I have to agree with you. People are irresponsible and don't pay bills but think they should be exempt from any consequences.

That is what is wrong in this world - people think they should get something for nothing.

If you can't afford the insurance than you should not own the home! It is not my fault you are living beyond your means.

Because it's those types of people that are probably benefit scroungers and expect the rest of us to fork out for them

What a question?

Why is the grass greener on the other side of the fence? I have no idea...but, if you get a good answer please let me know.

But, if I had to guess...I'd say they are just like the common thief they want something for nothing.

I totally agree with you. I've paid home insurance for nearly 40 years now and have only once made a claim.
I saw an interview on TV with a man who was showing all the things he had had ruined, his leather suite, his wide screen TV., his computer, his recently refitted luxury kitchen, new carpets etc. I would think he could have afforded some home insurance then he would not be holding his hand out to me, the tax-payer, to replace all his luxury items. Insurance costs less than £1 a day.
Come to think of it - which one of us is the mug?

At least now all those who have paid insurance know now not to waste any more money on it....................... typical

obanpussyginger
it's because we live in a blame culture, and everything that happens has to be someones fault. no insurance tough s**t, people who payed their premiums went without something else to pay for it.
if people choose to spend money, on other things, that's their problem, look at the cost and tell me it's unaffordable, my daughters contents only policy cost's 59p per day

dels replies
Absolutely but I am sure that you will agree that somebody who stands to lose everything needs some assistance. The insured person should get this same assistance plus his insurance pay out as well .

It is not as easy to answer as you may think. The people who are uninsured may have various reasons why, They may not be in a position financially to afford insurance and there must be numerous reasons why this has occurred. But, there are also those that would prefer to spend their money on other luxuries and insurance is bottom of the list for them. Perhaps each individual uninsured house hold should be examined to establish the circumstances and then decide what should be done. In the few cases where the household have put luxuries before insurance then perhaps they should be left to clean up on their own. Big choice to make.

dlpmikki
When there is such a large problem there should be help for those who need it.

However it is a persons choice not to have insurance and if they choose not to insure then they shouldn't expect other people to bail them out completely. If that was done then it would only encourage more people not to bother with insurance in future. Whilst I accept that insurance is a cost it is not an excessive one and should be within most peoples reach.

Local councils should treat people equally whether they have insurance or not.

people who claim they cannot afford it are plain wrong... for normal residents contents insurance is around £20..30 per month for 30..40,000 cover of contents.

by normal I mean people not living in a caravan or mobile home.. it can be difficult to get insurance, or more expensive to get insurance if you live in a caravan or mobile home

it will cost more if you live in an area which is prone to flooding (or an area where the insurer thinks is prone to flooding.. often thats based on your post code, and even if you live 50+ foot above a flood area, if you post code is the same as an area which has floods you will not be able to get away from the flood loading.

if you have made claims before on contents insurance that will force the cost of insurance up.

you may not be able to get insurance if your home has suffered frequent flooding,, say more than once in the last 10 years... think about it it insurance is essentailly a bet you make with the insurer that they will pay out if or when an specified event takes place (say burgalry, flooding or whatever). for them to make money they calcualte the risk of such an event over the life time of the policy.. soto give around £40,000 of contents cover for £240..360 pounds theny are suggesting its likely that you will make a substantial claim at worst (in their eyes) 1 in 100 times.

So unless these people are living adhjacne tto a river whihc floods frequently.. and as I understand it they aren't, and they don't live in uninsurable properties then they have chosen not to take out contents insurance and spent the money elsewhere. Id agree, we don't owe them anything, however common human decency does suggest that we should do something to help our fellow countrymen in time of need.

uniquechild
Most peole who have no insurance dont have it because they cannot afford it. Usually in countries where flooding occurs the country has disaster relief funds available for the poor since the welathy can afford insurance and get to replace everything where the poorer who cannot afford it have to accept whatever they are given and hence the difference of being able to afford and not being able to afford. You who has insurance come out the better for having it!

Are all of those people home owners tho? are some of them rental properties or council properties and if so, if people living there are on benefits then they wont be able to afford insurance, some insurance companies wont insure on flood plains and some have clauses to con you out of your money. If someone is renting a property privately then some of the goods in the home might not be theirs

What a nasty attitude to have, why shouldn't they be entitled to the same help?

Most insurances dont pay out for floods anyway, they have a get out clause of "an act of god", like lightening or storm damage.

Little Bear
to be fair, it was quite unavoidable for everyone, home insurance, although I am aware it says it covers against flood damage, earthquake etc BUT the majority of people claim for party damage, burgalry, fire damamge etc. In light of recent events, why can't you lay off their cases, they're just as affected by it as everyone else
