Why do we even need insurance companies?
Why can't doctor's just set their own prices, and the exchange be between patient and doctor? What purpose does the insurance company serve? Say for example I break my leg, and go to the doctor. He, or a surgeon operates, places a cast on me, and I pay them. Done. Where does the insurance company come into play in this process? Really aren't these companies just complicating things, all for profit?

Insurance can be a pain you know where! However, If you were to find out you need open heart surgery and have no insurance, the doctor would refuse to do the surgery, because he would know you cannot come up with the green. So the least of the evils is to have insurance with a deductible. With my policy I am responsible for everything under $2000. If the bills exceed that, the insurance company is there to back me up. This kind of insurance is not so expensive.

Most people can't afford the cost of medical services. I was hospitalized for four days. It cost over $30,000.00.

My Uncle was supposed to have an operation but he had a stroke on the operating table. He was very ill for months, but survived. His medical bills were over $250,000.00. Luckily, he had good insurance.

You are right though, a good deal of the cost of medical care can be controlled better, but we have Medicare and governmental interference to blame for the cost of health care in this country, too. It is a complicated problem. I don't have all the answers as to why it is so expensive, but I know this much: when you have a serious problem and don't have medical insurance, you are screwed!

Insurance is spreading the risk of loss. Part of the doctor's fees is the cost of malpractice insurance. I'm sure if you can pass laws against all lawsuits that insurance wouldn't be as necessary.

Feel free to cancel your insurance anytime you want and see how much you end up paying out of pocket throughout your life time. If you don't have insurance the doctor will just bill you. However, the reason many doctors offices won't see you if you don't have insurance is because most people that don't have insurance can't afford to see the doctor on their own. If a person can't afford it the doctor doesn't get paid, plain and sumple.

Insurance companies are all about protecting people against the odds of something happening. Obviously they base the odds on several things including the fact that some people don't understand what they have and end up cancelling it before a claim is ever made, or based on the fact that not every single person in the world will make a claim all at once and in the end it is always more likely that the insurance company will end up with more money than they pay out. Conversely, if you need to make a claim it will often work out to FAR less than what you as an individual had paid in.

And yes they are all for profit, no different than any other company in the world. That's what companies do. Why is it that insurance companies get such a bad rep for running a business for profit, yet no one walks into Wal-Mart demanding a free pair of jeans, jsut because they make profits, or no one walks into McDonald's and demands a free big Mac just on the principal that they had shown a profit that quarter? Businesses provide a service for which they deserve to get compensated for.

The idea of insurance is to assign some of the risk that you face every day in life. If you break your leg, can you afford to have it fixed? If you were diagnosed with cancer, can you afford treatment? Do you know what that costs?

Some plans are more expensive than others, but you have less risk. Perhaps the answer is that we need coverage without all the bells and whistles. Maybe some of us do, but not everybody. I have clients who are frequently at the doctor or take several prescriptions every day. Can we all expect to earn enough to pay these expenses and still put food on our table for our family?

Insurance is not going anywhere. Pick a level of coverage and be healthy.

Actually, if the medical costs are not that ridiculously-robbery expensive, there would be no need for insurance.

What a world we live in!
shhhh...you don't want them to hear you thinking!

Someone has to suck all the money out of people while they deny all claims...

Don't they??

Otherwise, you might have money left over after paying doctor bills...

And we can't have that.

But what if medical insurance didnt exist (or was outlawed). Do you mean to tell me that all hospitals/doctors would go out of business because their prices were too high?? Would that really happen?? I dont think so....be done with medical insurance and watch those prices come down....free markets have a way of doing that.
