So let me get this straight- people will pay out a good sum of money each month for cell phones, internet service, dining out, cable TV, etc. but they won't spend money to protect themselves, their property, or their family?
If you think about it, insurance really isn't one of those fun things that provide immediate satisfaction. Most people do understand it, and the need for it, but considering insurance is considering the many things in life that may go wrong. People really don't like talking about it and so they will avoid it altogether.
As an agent, I hope you don't approach people with gloom and doom or "this is what's best for you" attitudes. If you are a friendly and down to earth person, you'll find many more people will be open to you and your services. |

You seem to think that if you know the reasons that people don't want to buy insurance, then you can use this information to sell them insurance.
It really doesn't matter WHY they do or don't want insurance. It is your job to find the people that already want insurance, not waste your time trying to convert people to your way of thinking.
Troy Korsgaden (I think I spelled his name right) has a fairly decent book about running an insurance agency. Million dollar roundtable and all that.
What do I understand about insurance? Well for one thing, insurance ISN'T protection, it's more like mitigation, or repair. For instance, car insurance doesn't protect me from ANYTHING. My car can be destroyed regardless of my coverage limits. In a similar way, health insurance doesn't protect me from disease, and life insurance doesn't protect me from dying.
With that said, it is common to refer to insurance as protection - but it isn't.

I am also an agent and I also don't like to be an aggressive sales person. I feel that people will buy what they want and feel they need if they can afford it. In my experience people won't buy if they cannot afford (or can get it cheaper elsewhere regardless of coverage) or if they feel they don't need it. Many business owners don't see their liability and don't want ins. Also, I think people get confused by insurance. Many people don't want to try to learn a new lingo! Best advice? Be helpful, kind, and explain everything. By doing so, you may be able to get the business because you offer more than just a good policy-you offer help. |

I am ex-agent myself, but I had no insurance. The reason is money. Live in this high standard of living country, I sometime finding hard time to foot my bills. Insurance is in long term, if people also can't suffer in short term, where got time to plan for long term? |

What kind of insurance are you refering to? Health insurance?
I don;t have it because I cannot afford it. I am a truck driver and own my own truck. My truck insurance cost $ 117.00 a month. And think of the damage those things can do. Yet Health insurance is so much higher. It has priced me right out of the market. |

I buy auto insurance because I have to. I have full coverage, though my car is paid off.
My life accident and disabilty insurance is paid for by my work.
I see insurance as a necessary evil. I pay into it, but if I need it, they do not pay me back. |

A lot of people don't want to think about death...and most people also get confused with all the different life insurance options, etc. My dad was an agent for a few years (Primerica), so he taught me about a lot of stuff and it is so confusing. I can see how a lot of people might think it's a rip off. |

Well, *I* understand a lot about insurance, LOL, being an agent for 20+ years.
But the main reasons why people don't buy insurance are:
1. They are poor money managers - and can't see more than five minutes into the future
2. They look at insurance as a way to "make money" and don't think they are getting value for the price
3. They are naive and optomistic about "it can't happen to me"
4. They are anti-social, have nothing to lose, and self-centered.
There's hope for 1, 2, and 3, but the #4 people are hopeless. You know the ones, they walk into your office with expensive leather coats, wearing tons of gold jewelry, while talking on the latest & greatest cell phone - don't want to stop talking while YOU fill out the application, then want you to loan them the money for the down payment, because they're leasing a brand new car and don't have any spare cash, or else they can't go out drinking tonight . . . sigh. |

I've been an agent on and off for 13 years. A few others mentioned the number one problems and they're right.
#1 reason: they can't afford it. They'll give you 1,000 other excuses but this one is usually the bottom line.
2? I've heard people tell me that insurance is a scam and refuse to buy it. Even though I explain that it is designed to protect you from financial loss, they counter that insurance companies find ways to not pay claims. This is true of a lot of them, but if you have ur crap together and deal only with good, solid companies, you'll find that they HAVE to pay or else they risk breaking the law and losing their right to operate in the state.
These are the people that get in a car wreck the next day or their house burns down and they want to ring my phone asking if they can still get coverage, which is by then way too late, and then they'll try to get you to back date the application to make it look like they applied for coverage before the accident happened, which is illegal and can cost you your license and even land you in jail. Not much you can do with those people. |
