Why does my health insurance partially cover things even though I have a deductible (not that I'm complaining)?
It's weird, I thought since I had a deductible I'd have to pay out of pocket for everything up until I reached the $4000 point, but every time I hand the receptionist my card she says, "thanks you're all set" and then I leave without paying a red cent and then a month or two later I get a bill for less than half what the visit cost and the insurance covers the rest.

Is this normal?
Additional Details
I don't get charged the same amount though, it seems to be between just over a third of the bill. hmm

ask your HR dept - must just be the way your particular plan works - some pay 80% up to X dollars and then 100% over that amount

You should be receiving explanations of benefits from your insurance company explaining how the doctor is charging. If your doctor is a contracting provider for your insurance, even though you have a deductible to meet, the amount that is applied toward that deductible is the agreed upon contracted rate and not the actual fee that the doctor would charge. Even though you think that the doctor does the same thing in the same amount of time every time you are seen, this is probably not the case. What he is charging the insurance should be on the EOB's you get from the insurance. If you are not getting these, contact your carrier for them or an explanation. Some carriers also allow you to veiw EOB's on line. The reason you don't pay the doctor at the time, is because the doctor bills the insurance first, and once they receive the EOB, the doctor does the contractual write-off and bills you. Since your deductible is not met, the insurance is not actually paying anything to the doctor, the doctor is writing off the amount that is over the agreed upon amount with the insurance company-the thought being that he will make up some of this in the volume of patient's that see him due to being in this network of "preferred" providers.

Yes, it's normal.

And it's because your physicians sign an agreement that they're not going to charge your insurer more than x for x service, y for y service, z for z service. So if they normally charge, say, $150 for a visit but have agreed to only charge your insurer $75, they have to charge you the same thing they charge your insurer even though you have not reached your deductible. So you get a bill for $75. Once you have satisfied your deductible then the insurer pays the $75.

Makes you glad you have insurance, doesn't it?

Good luck!

You're paying the negotiated fee. Your doctor is billing $225 (for example) and the insurance company has negotiated $125 for the service, so the $100 disappears. They don't pay it. The $125 in my example is what would go towards your deductible.

You just learned one of the reasons why getting a higher deductible is usually smarter than a lower one.

It can be, depending on what the visits are about. It could also be, that you're paying the full amount, but the "full amount" has been adjusted downwards, to reflect the insurance discount.
