Betadayz | Why is car insurance mandatory but not health insurance? |
Say you have mandatory car insurance but not health insurance and you get in a car accident and get injured; your mandatory car insurance covers your car but what about you? |
|

Well, car insurance is NOT mandatory in WI or NH, and health insurance IS mandatory, in MA.
You need to buy insurance to plan for emergencies like that. |

Because car insurance is mainly to protect others involved if something happened, that's why usually only liability is required. If you have good coverage car insurance it will cover medical expenses resulting from accidents up to a certain amount. |

Car insurance is mandatory because you could injure a third party (the person or property) and thus the third party could collect for your negligence.
If you get sick, the only person affected is you.
I don't really care if you have develop an illness that is expensive to treat (as long as you are not contagious). I do care if you ram into my car and injure me. I can collect from your insurance to pay for the damages. If your insurance is inadequate, I can still sue you and take your savings and other assets.
Go talk to an insurance agent.

Your health is your problem and if you do not look after it you suffer the loss no one else. If you drive a car and injure someone through your own fault then that is your problem because they will want help to recover their losses which can be considerable and their is no reason why you should be able to walk away from it saying, "Oh dear I can't afford to pay that tough" I refer to UK law |
|

Huh?

Check your policy. In my state the mandatory part of the insurance doesn't cover damage to my car...only the damage I do to other peoples cars. It's liability insurance not collision that is mandatory. If I am liable for the damages caused in the accident and only have the mandatory level of insurance the insurance pays for the other persons car but not mine. |

i wish health insurance would be mandatory to everybody. it is too bad that it is not. we have got to change the law. |

Some people count on their car insurance to cover their health expenses, for some reason, should they be involved in an accident.
I'm not sure where people got this impression, but health insurance is what will provide benefits should you be injured.

Your car insurance will cover injuries that accored in your automobile accident. It will cover the other people as well if you were at fault. Most states have a 25K-50K minimum for traffic injuries.
As to your question why is it mandatory to have car insurance but not health insurance. Well car insurance you are taking 1,000's of peoples life into your hand every time you get in a car. You not having health insurance only affects you.
Thats my best guess on what they were thinking. But remember out of the top 25 countries in the world by GNP. We are the only nation with no universal health care. We are the richest nation by GNP but no health care, its messed up. |

Car insurance is required because you must be able to cover someone else if you hit them. The required insurance does not cover you. They dont care if you cover yourself, with car insurance or health. |

In relation to the mandatory car insurance and the coverage for your medical bills that are related to the accident, it will depend on which state you live in. Although most states have mandatory auto insurance, they do not necessarily require you to obtain coverage for yourself or occupants of the car that you own.
In some states, mandatory auto insurance exists to make sure that if someone else is injured when they get into an accident with you, they will not be left without any recourse. By requiring all cars to have some minimum level of coverage, an individual who is injured will at least be able to get some level of redress for their injuries.
In some other states, the mandatory auto insurance also requires that you have personal injury protection (also known as no-fault insurance). The reason for this protection is to make sure that people who are injured can get necessary treatment to allow them to achieve the mythical maximum medical improvement after an accident.
As to why there is mandatory "health" insurance for work related accidents or (in no-fault states) auto accidents - these exist as a cost of doing business in the state. If you want to run a business, you need to have workers comp to make sure that your employees are able to be treated if they are hurt. Similally, if you want to own a car in a no-fault state, you need to make sure that if someone who is occupying the car is injured, there will be a policy available to pay for their care.
If you live in a state without no-fault auto, you will need to get your private health insurance carrier to pay your bill. As to why there is no mandatory health insurance, talk to your congressman. |

Mandatory Car Insurance is NOT required to cover you ... it's to cover claims by the person ("3rd Party") you crashed into :-)
[only 3rd party cover is required by law .. however it's actually difficult to get the minimum cover - typically the minimum possible is "3rd party, fire and theft" = perhaps you have heard of this ?] |

Why does everyone think that not having health insurance affects no one but the individual? A non-insured person who suffers a heart attack, or a stroke, or falls off a ladder and is paralyzed, is most definitely affecting lots of people because the cost of healthcare for the non-insured is enormous. We don't leave uninsured people untreated, we just force society to pick up the cost that no individual could pay on their own. Insurance for catastrophic healthcare SHOULD be mandatory because everyone is affected. |
