Mat H | Why is car insurance so expensive? |
I have been driving for 4 years now and have just under 2 year no claims experience to my name. I am currently looking at buying a new vehicle, something with a bit of sport and speed, I am aiming for the 1.8 MG ZR or the 2.0 RenaultSport 172.
Why is car insurance so expensive? I am a law abiding individual who has followed education all the way to honors level, I work full time, never cause a nuisance in the community, keep up-to-date with current affairs etc. It isn't like I am one of these boy racers who don't insure themselves etc.
So, why on earth are people who do everything by the book penalised for the pillocks! |

I agree, I have a clean licence and never claimed in my life ,yet mine is through the roof. All because people cant control themselves when they get behind a wheel it sickens me, we shouldn't be held responsible for the incompetency of others :) |

Rates are based on sex, age, vehicle, area the vehicle is kept, whether or not it is in a garage, crime stats for the area, and several others. Males generally pay higher rates than females. A recent divorce will increase rates.
Yes, good drivers usually pay for the bad. |

Whether or not you had an accident you will in some way be paying for everyone who has had an accident. Insurance companies have to make up that money somehow. There should be a better why but that's just the way it is for now. |

Because this country is becoming the land of opportunity for those organizations who become so large that no one can touch them and, thus, they can do whatever they want. |

It's just our system of lumping in the risk together. In the US I believe car insurance is different dependent on your level of academic achievement - read - thickos have to pay more. But in Britain where the politicians strive to make us all 'equal' you'll just have to pay up for the mistakes of the stupid. |

Me too. You don't state your age but i'm 28 and for a car like you're talking about the insurance is wild! Keeping it on the street pushes up the amount,so does the area. |

Lawyers and lawsuits. That's what drives the cost up. |

Your insurance generally costs more if you are a younger driver, have no or less-than-perfect credit, own a performance or sporty car, own a luxury vehicle, poor driving history (wrecks, tickets, etc), or if you own a car that is very popular (I'll explain later).
If you have tickets, wrecks where you are at fault, etc your premiums will increase for a period of time.
Now..about the popular car...
These cars have higher insurance rates because there are lots of them on the road, therefore more chances of claims being made by owners of these particular cars. In my area of the USA the Toyota Corolla is an excellent example because you see them everywhere. ...and I happen to own one. Fun car, btw.
Over here in the USA you can get a discount on inurance by taking a DMV approved defensive driving course and providing your insurance company with proof of passing and completion.
In response to the answerer above me...
I'm in the USA. Insurance prices here are not determined by your level of education. I never provided information about my education to my insurance company, but that doesn't mean they didn't get the information elsewhere. I explained in my answer above what insurance companies look at, which is true for the USA. I've been driving for 7 years, clean driving record (no tickets or at-fault wrecks), only 1 claim (not at fault wreck) but I still pay through the roof because I drive a Toyota Corolla which is very popular in my area. I think I'm charged more because I'm having to pay for the stupidity of other people. |

its so much because if you have been driving for 4 years, but only have 1 years no claims you either havent done much driving or have had accidents.
on top of that you are buying a boy racer car, so you cant complain about being treated like a boy racer
and on top of that, until you are over 25 the insurance industry lumps you with all the boy racers, because how ever much you point out you are not a boy racer they only have your word for that (not helped by your boy racer requirements for a car).
need i go on. my step son is having the same problems. £but its only a fiesta" he keeps saying, yes I point out, but you are under 21 and havent had a full licence for much more than week. WHAT DO YOU EXPECT!!!!
you will be the same as him. when you are 40 and have had umpteen million years no claims they will be paying you to have thie insurance.
and besides, haveyou seen the price of hospital bills for thepeople you hit, of course its going to cost to cover that. |

Well it doesn't have to be, if you choose the correct provider for your needs. However, some can be expensive, only because the possibility for a loss might be substantial, and if you compare how much you pay monthly, to the amount the insurance company has to pay if you wreck your car, you're getting out easy. |

Insurance companies are huge there reserves match up with banks. They have to make at least 60 cents out of every dollar usually to stay profitable. So they don't want to take on risks that will have them paying. And so they usually price themselves out of risks they don't like. As an insurance agent, if your under 25 and wanting a new sports car with full coverage it is very expensive add on a zip code in a big city= bad news. |

if I'm understanding you, you should be 20, if you got your license at age 16. and you have 2 years of clean driving.
so that means that your first 2 years were a bit bumpy??
And you are looking to get a sportscar... OH MY
Insurance companies base rates on statics.. statically at 20 yr old in a sports car is a bad risk.. so they are going to make sure they get a premium price. Sorry, that's just the way it is. If you were married, the company looks at you as a responsible human being, your rates go down a bit, married and older, now your responsible and more experience... yo get the picture.
Hang in there.... when you get the premium for your 2005 Saab 93s turbo conv. and it's only 248. / 6mos., I sit here and think... dang am I old..... |

Hate to say, but that's just how the world works. The same rules apply to the cost of goods, not just insurance. For example, stores lose money due to shoplifters & they have to recoup their costs somewhere.
So to answer your question, the cost of repairs is rising, there are many many many people out on the road who are uninsured, there is HUGE insurance fraud going on everywhere, courts/juries are awarding outrageous verdicts to people that make absolutely no sense, etc. etc.....
Angers me as well but what can you do? |

they make it up as they go! i had 20 years claim free and in the space of a year had to make 2 claims, neither of which was my fault, but i`ve been dropped down to 2 years! my brother is a taxi driver, a woman ran into him just before xmas. since then he has had a hire car for his taxiing at a cost to the insurance company of over £8000, they have just paid out for his car today. thats where the money goes, its a disgrace. |

First off, insurance is a legal requirement; it is NOT an optional extra.
Insurance is expensive for you because you are a bad risk.
Why are you a bad risk?
You are young, you are male, you haven't even managed to go 2 years without an accident and you now want a fast, sporty car when you haven't proved you can control a less powerful one yet.
You will continue to be a bad risk until you are over 25 AND have proved that you are a responsible driver by being accident free for at least 4 continuous years. |
