Why is it not discrimination for insurance companies to charge more based on gender, age, or marital status?

It is discrimination. And it is not fair to the individual. However, the government has legalized it, so the insurance companies can get away with it.

I am in favor of getting rid of the current rating methods, and using personal statistics instead. (For example, you can't charge more for a youthful driver, but you can base rates on the number of years licensed to drive.)

Because insurance companies base their rates on statistical data. Those paying higher rates are in categories that have been proven to be more costly to the insurance company.

Because insurance companies rates are based on very carefully calculated and government regulated scientific statistical analysis. Those rate differences aren't based on prejudice or discrimination by individuals in the company, they are based on probability of claims.

"pricing discrimination"?. But in insurance it is called "rating".

Gender, Age, Marital status, Health Condition are all the parameters required by the insurers to rate their products based on a set of statistical data and claim experiences. it is also differ geographically.

So if you fall into their safe zone, your premium will be cheaper. Those who fall into their "high risk" zone the premium will be higher.

They need to do this to ensure their existence.
Quotes may differ from insurers for the same coverage. As different insurers have different risk profile in their portfolio.

Because these attributes affect behaviors that will change survival likelyhood. The younger you are the more likely you are to take risks. If you're old, your health is less likely to be good. If you're married, you have other responsibilities besides yourself and thus one tends to behave more responsibily. Men vs. women is the same... although I couldn't tell you which is riskier... men take more risks in general, but I'm a woman driver and I'll admit women don't drive as safely.

halestrm
Because there is hard statisical data that shows young single men get in more accidents. Young married women are more likely to get pregnant. Men die younger than women and married men die younger than single men.

Without the statisical data it would be.

it IS discrimination - it's just not unfair, or unlawful discrimination.

If there wasn't any discrimination, a 40 year old man with a ford escort would pay the same for car insurance as a 16 year old boy with a 2007 Camaro, and a 30 year old man would pay the same for LIFE insurance as an 80 year old man.

"Discrimination" means, as you pointed out, lumping people together according to similar characteristics. Some discrimination is lawful, and works to your benefit. Some is lawful, and DOESN'T work to your benefit, but is still fair. Then there is UNLAWFUL discrimination that is NOT fair, and illegal.

Life is all about discrimination. That's why most people pick a sundae for dessert, rather than a plate of liver. They're DISCRIMINATING.

statistics, its their right to base their rates on solid facts to back them up... you dont have to buy insurance, so its not like every 16 yr old male will have to pay more then every 45 yr old female every month

Sarah Smile
Oh, thats not all they do, they are crooked, they also base your rates on your credit, yeap, they think if you have bad credit you are more likely to commit insurance fraud, how do you like them apples?
