Why is it that some people will answer questions about insurance, without knowing what they are talking about?
I have been answering questions on YA for about a month. I am retired from the insurance business after 30 years. There are a lot of people who try to answer questions about insurance, and they don't have a clue as to what they are talking about, in a lot of cases. I don't want to offend anyone, but I think a person should have some working knowledge about a subject before answering questions about it. I know this is only a game, but why give out false information?

It is because people have no sense of responsibility. Yes, it is just a game, but I use Yahoo! Answeres for a reference when making certain decisions and it has worked out well for me. Since the internet is so inpersonal, people have no quarrels giving out their opinions, because they don't have to deal with cleaning up the mess if someone actually listens to them. James, you have a good point. People should not take Yahoo! Answers as their only reference. Yes this site is good for information, you just have to make sure the person anwering your questions is qualified. Even then, do a little research yourself!

People offer incorrect information, but they also have opinions. I find "top contributors" leaving incorrect information all the time. I think for some the effort is sincere and others just want points and to feel important.

LOL, that's one of the reasons why I stopped coming here actually. I got fed up with the multitude of incorrect answers being picked as "best."

What does it say about the Yahoo Answers "Insurance" section when the one giving the most incorrect answers is deemed "Top Answerer"?

EDIT: As usual, Aaron P makes an excellent point. I know *someone* who should be checking the terms of her E&O coverage. < ahem >

Some people mean well and are offering "life experience" knowledge with no clue as to why the answer was the way that it was for them, as opposed to what the real rule of law is.

Other people answer just to rack up points.

I would agree with the statment above that some of the "top contributors" offer misinformation (whether intentionally or not I don't know).

Bottom Line- People should use Yahooanswers for a starting point in trying to solve their problems, not the only answer.

Because they care more about their own personal enjoyment and self-importance than actually helping people with an good answer.

Inaccurate information should be taken seriously because Y!A does not prevent askers from filing suit against answerers. If you provide incorrect, actionable advice, you are potentially liable.

We all want to have fun, and there will always be philosophical differences. However, we should all try to do our part to elevate the quality of information available to the public.

i agree, its not only about insurance info. peoples shouldn't give out false info to anyone in any profession. that's what i hate too. i work in a bank, sometimes its very challenging to face problems but best is to be honest and tell the truth regardless if they like it or not.

I am an Engineer and see the same lack of knowledge in the Engineering category. The fact is that a lot of people on this site answer questions that they clearly have no business answering. I wouldn't come here for any real reliable answers...

mbrcatz
Well, you said it - it's a game. It's all about the points.

Anyone can answer any question about anything here, even if they're making it up.

**Sort of like Ben says, anyone who comes here looking for reliable, accurate information, kinda deserves what they get. The REAL answer to 99% of the questions here is, "GO ASK YOUR AGENT."
