Universal health insurance is a joke. Look at how the government manages Medicare and Medicaid right now- those two programs waste so much money taking care of people who don't take care of themselves. The reply above is correct- the government doesn't do anything well. If you think healthcare is expensive now, just wait until the government takes it over. Also, you should understand that health care is not a fundamental right. If the government pays for everyones healthcare, it should also pay for everones food and shelter. This is ludicrous. Go get a job with insurance and keep yourself healthy. |

My question to you is if our "sister" countries/allies have such great results for their health care, why is it that people seeking health care often "immigrate" to the US for services that are not available or cannot be obtained in their own countries-often seeking medicaid or other financial assistance to boot?
The simple answer is universal health care does not work. In some countries, the wait list for specialized care simply is often times too long or non-existant for effective care. If you are diagnosed with cancer in some countries and are stage 3 or 4, you are given comfort care and no treatment at all. Many countries tout universal care but don't deliver. In the US, if you meet financial and disability guidelines, you qualify for free or cheaper care. In addition, for some types of medical care, there are organizations that can assist.
I know it ain't perfect, but for most, it works. |

I have health insurance. Maybe people should get a job and buy their own health insurance. I also don't want to pay for illegal immigrants to get health care. |

Government never runs things smoothly. Look at the post office or the DMV. If it could run efficiently that would be different.
Look at how the government (both parties) allowed banks to give people bad loans. |

I heard someone talking about Universal Health care on the radio, they said we shouldn't get it because you have to go to certain doctors and those doctors get so many that they can't take good care of so many patients. The guy talking was from a country that has it already. But it is probably coming to us soon anyway. |

I dont know. Thats a good question. Im a full-time college student from a really low-income family with 2 of us off in college and I get my Government program insurance taken away from me due to age. Now I get to suffer because I decided to go to school instead of working adn being able to afford it. Is the opportunity cost really worth my health??? Hummm. but oh well I guess im not that important....
Sorry AmLB im too busy being a student and trying to have a brighter future for myself and my family to be able to work and afford health insurance. You should try being poor sometime and learn how hard it is.... |

I live in Canada. We have universal health care here. Keep your private insurance/pay for health care system as long as you can. Free health care does not mean good health care.
Last week a man litterally died in a waiting room at a hospital in one city in Canada. He was in the ER waiting for 34 HOURS before he was noticed. This past Friday, a 76 year old man sat in the Emergency waiting room with severe pain for 9 hours. He complained to the on duty nurse that he was in pain and thirsty and the nurses ignored him. Other patients waiting with him in the ER had to get him water and blankets to keep him comfortable. Absolutely disgusting! If this happend in a private company that company would be shut down. I am not even making this up. Google search in "man dies in Winnipeg ER" or man in severe pain waited nine hours in ER" and they should come up.
I personally twisted my knee up last December. I was just finally able to book an appointment for a follow up consultation (not even the scope or surgery), for Oct. 20. From there they will decide what proceedure to take and I'm back on a waiting list. If I wanted to go to the USA and pay to have it done, I could have had it taken care of last December (it's nothing serious, I'm well insured and doesn't effect my standard of living so it's no big deal for me to wait it out).
I have personal insurance for critical illness, long term care, and personal Health Insurance, so if I am seriously ill, I can go to the USA or somewhere else to get treated right away. It's also been widely reported that our Canadian federal governments 'employee benefits' are set up so that if they are ill, they are able to travel to the USA to get treated rather than waiting in our system. Our own government doesn't beleive it works. |

Several reasons.
1. The USA is NOT a socialist country.
2. Only 15% of Americans are uninsured. HALF of these, are uninsured BY CHOICE, not by economics or health issues.
3. It's really, really expensive. And the government has screwed up everything it's tried to fix. The whole AIG thing was caused by congressional legislation called "Sarbanes Oxley Act", at least partly.
If you can't wait to get into government housing, you'll love government healthcare. Oh, and if you want to SEE government healthcare in action, just go to the VA hospitals. |
