Cades momma | Why would a prescription not be covered? |
My husband is trying to quit smoking. He got a prescription for Chantix, and our insurance will not cover it. I guess I am a bit confused as to why an insurance company would not cover something that could save your life? If he ends up getting lung cancer they would cover the cost but not something to prevent it. Can someone please help me understand this.
We also have great insurance. My husband is a teacher and they have the best policy. We dont even have a co-pay. |

Call the insurance company and ask them. There could be a zillion reasons its not covered. It could be non-formulary (not on the preferred list). It could be that the employer chose not to cover smoking deterrents. And a lot of policies cover smoking cessation drugs but they need an authorization, so it could just require prior approval. If you have the old traditional or indemnity type of coverage, it may be covered under major medical.
Oh and in response to the person who said to get Wellburtrin, be careful with that too, some groups may not cover mental heath drugs either. |

Tell him to ask his Dr. for a prescription for Wellbutrin. It is considered an anti-depressant and I used it to stop smoking. The insurance will pay for it as it comes up as something diferent than a smoking cessation aid. |

insurance sucks.... and no, if he does get cancer the insurance will not cover it more then likely. not until much later when its to late they will keep saying "its not life or death at this point" untill its to late then they will cover it or they will blame him and find a way out of covering it. i know my nana died because when she tried to quit insurance wouldnt cover it and then 5 years later ya, it sucks insurance should go die its truely not fair how they play theres no rules too what they do and the goverment wont do crap about it if u wanna hear about good insurance look up how england does theres ud be shocked at how much better theres is. anyways tell him good luck with quitting im also working on quitting and witth the pill i didnt find much good luck but with the patch from rites aid did a huge diffrence it was over the counter and pretty cheap (compared to butts) anyways good luck! |

They probably exclude that under the clause that says they do not pay for any treatment, services, medication that is not medically necessary. Yes, quitting will make you more healthy, but it may be specifically excluded. Look under the plan provisions for "Exclusions and Limitations".
I heard once that one company excluded it because too many do not finish the programs and pick up smoking again. If the program is not considered "effective treatment" it will probably not be considered medically necessary. |

The insurance company may think there is a generic drug that is cheaper that your husband should take. They may have a purchasing contract with a couple of drug companies who make a competing drug which would be covered. Your husband is entitled to contact the insurance company and ask why not; ask him to find out who at his school (or district) to contact with his question. The insurer is required to give an explanation. |
