Depends on the dr. office and your insurance status. If you don't have it, your better off going to a low income clinic. They charge you on a sliding scale. Call your dr. office and ask. The worst they can say is you have to pay in advance, then just call a different dr. Most will bill you afterward, if you pay some up front. Also, if you have to have lab work or something, they can't charge you up front for that bc they won't know how much to charge until it's done. BTW, the country/state your in matter too. From what I hear, Canadians have it well!
I'm in the US, California |

~~Most offices will not see you unless payment is received prior to being seen. It's just the way it is, especially in this tight economy.
You may have options through your county health department if you qualify. Call them (in the beginning pages of your local phone book). |

Most expect payment when you go. |

well...if you go to an urgent care, theres a chance that they may want payment before you are seen by the doctor. But there are many that don't make you pay before you are seen, and trust me, they are use to people saying they want to be billed. They are sometimes not too happy about this, but they don't have much of a choice either right? I use to work in a Dr office, actually an urgent care. We had welfare patients with 3 dollar copays that never got paid. They would ask us to bill them and theres nothing you can really say. So we sent out bills. |

If you have insurance, you will be required to pay the copay upfront. If you don't have insurance, most places require that you pay in full at the time of service. If you can't afford that, I suggest you look for your county free clinic. |

If you have insurance, most doctor's offices want a co-pay. They will then bill the insurance company and then you are responsible for the remainder of the bill. This information is for the US. I can't speak for the rest of the world.
If you don't have insurance then you are expected to pay the full amount due. Some office's may make credit arrangements, but this is usually done for established patients. |

Most of the time, they want payment at the time service is rendered. Most people that don't pay up front, end up stiffing them. |
