Will health insurance cover existing medical bills?
I have a kidney stone that is unbearable and I want to get it checked out. I just applied for health insurance but I have to wait to find out if it's approved. Can I go to the hospital today and have it be covered when my insurance application is approved?

Health insurance only covers services that happen on or after the effective date of coverage.

Also, you may not have coverage for your kidney stone at all, if the policy you purchase has a waiting period for pre-existing conditions. (It could be 6-12 months after the policy becomes active before you have any coverage for the kidney stone.)

If you did not disclose the kidney stone on the application, your entire policy would be terminated for fraud if (when) they find out.

I can't imagine any scenario under which you'd have coverage for this kidney stone. (Unless you lied on the application and are lucky enough not to get caught.) Sorry.

Sorry no.

Think of it like this, if your house burnt down yesterday, and you went and got insurance today, do you think insurance would pay you for the fire?

There would be no insurance companies in business if this was the way they operated.

Not likely. Your insurance will cover nothing done before the effective date of coverage. And beyond that, there are usually exclusions for existing conditions to prevent just what you are trying to do.

It's not going to be approved, with this current condition. And if you lied about the condition, not only will the condition not be covered, but they'll cancel your policy for fraud.

Sure you can go to the hospital - but no way, no how, is this going to be covered.

gnightgracie72
no, the insurance won't cover a pre-existing medical condition or pre-existing bills.

Snick
It doesn't cover pre existing medical bills, however SOME insurance does cover pre existing conditions. YOu have to find out if your policy covers that or not.

All insurance companies have a preexisting condition clause.
The exact definition & wording of the clause differs from one insurance
company to another, usually it doesn't cover any condition which was diagnosed or treated within a fixed period (3-5 yrs) before the insurance effective date. Sometimes, it even excludes conditions which
can be determined to exist whether or not it was symptomatic, diagnosed or treated.

The insurance company will look at your medical records to determine
if the condition was diagnosed or treated before the effective date & whether it is covered.

No. There's a 6 to 9 month wait before you can claim pre-existing conditions.

Bills, no way. Preexisting conditions, maybe. (they darn well should anyway.)

Let me get you the answer for your application. It's going to be declined and if it's not it's certainly not going to pay for your kidney stone.

Think about that for a second. Do you really think it's possible that after you write a check to the insurance company for $200 that they're going to be able to write one for $5,000 and make a profit?

Insurance is designed for UNEXPECTED situations...not expected ones. And, if more people didn't needlessly put themselves at risk there would be less complaints in the long run.

Good luck with your current situation as it sounds like you've certainly put yourself in a pickle, but once it's rectified get yourself some insurance for the next time.
