Will home owners insurance pay for water damage if I was out of town for work?
I recently purchased a home and then was forced out of town to work a week later, resulting in never moving in the house. While working 3hrs away my parents would check on the house occasionally, and recently on one of their 'checks' noticed a pipe in the upstairs burst. Friends have told me that insurance often does not cover if no one is in the house...is this true? I have worked out of town for the railroad for approx 3 months (due to economy) and am unable to live at home.

Home insurance is actually very flexible. I'm not familiar with all the details of my policy, but my homeowners insurance agent is always helpful. Try calling your agent or a homeowners agent in your town. http://www.americaschoicetoday.com/Home-Insurance.html They will be able to assist you.

Chekc you policy, I think it will state if the home is vacant no coverage. If it doesn't then probably, most damages such as that occur while people are not at home. Good luck, that sucks.

True. You never moved in. The house is vacant.

Water damage for burst pipes is automatically suspended, unless you kept the heat on, or drained the pipes.

And your policy is going to get cancelled, as it's not owner occupied.

Sorry.

It will depend on your policy. I think most will cover it.

It should pay if you took precautions to keep the heat on and the pipe burst because it was defective, not because of your neglect.

It should not matter if you were home or not.

nogoodloser
It doesn't matter if you were not in the house. Insurance should pay for the damage.

You living in the home or not does not matter. Insurance covers the home you got it for. Not the home you happen to be sleeping in that night. If you insurance is for the home at that address. Then that is the home it will pay out on. Now you just have to contact the insurance company and see if that particular accident is covered. If you just bought the home, you should have a home warranty. Unless you opted not to get one. Which would have been a bad idea.

Do you have flood insurance?? It should pay for it, but make sure they get the repairs done in a timely fashion, so you dont have a mold issue and get sick from the mold
