Will my health insurance have to cover me?
My health insurance expired on May 31st. I was hospitalized on May 30th for cellulitis.?
My doctor released my from the hospital on the 31st and put me on in home IV antibiodics. Since the diagnoses and preapproval was given by the insurance company before expiration, will the insurance have to continue to pay for this approved treatment?

No. Coverage ceases at 12:01am on May 31st.

That means you'll pay for the time you were in the hospital on the 31st, and any services you received on the 31st.

Pre-approval doesn't mean that you have coverage even after your policy cancels. Sorry.

Some do, most don't. You have to check your policy and see what it states.

Check with your plan. This might fall under what's called Continuty of Care - meaning they'll cover this ailment and that's it, period. The end.

Some plans don't CARE about continuity, when it ends, it ends.

It's worth checking.

Insurance
check the grace period clause, some insurer will have a 30 days grace period before the policy lapsed.

good luck

Andre .
The hospital stay SHOULD be covered. Unfortunately any treatment not performed inpatient after May 31st will more than likely not be covered.

I suggest you call your insurance company (or employer) and ask about what options you have for continuing your coverage beyond the 31st. Beware, though...if you plan on utilizing COBRA you will be spending quite a bit on insurance premiums.

i would double check but most will not provide coverage past cancel date, however, if they pre-certified, pre-approved payment & treatment to the provider, they may likely be on the hook if they confirmed coverage and approved treatment. it sounds like most of your care and cost was incurred prior to expiration date. can you continue your coverage?

The admission will be covered, but the after care (anything incurred after May 31st) will not be covered. You had best not drop your coverage for any reason. If you aren't in a grace period, ask about COBRA. If you aren't eligible for COBRA, or can't afford it, then call the social worker at the hosital and try to get on disability or Medicaid.
