Jenny L | Will recession affect Blue Cross Blue Shield or any other insurance company? |
I have a job offer at Blue Cross Blue Shield, I am currently working for some other company, I was looking for another job coz I think my current job is a dead end type. But since it's recession, do you think I should move on to Blue Shield...I mean, how secure will I be there? |

Very secure. Way, secure.
The only effect that recession has on insurance companies, is that the rates will go up.
See, insurance companies make most of their money from their investments - the RESERVES. They use a lot of that to subsidize claim payouts, and keep the rates lower for the customers. When the market goes down, the investment income goes down, so there's less money to subsidize rates, and premiums go up.
The average health insurance company pays out $.99 in claims for every $1 they take in. Administrative expenses - like your potential salary - are paid out of reserve income.
No worry. You'll be as secure there as anywhere - people will KEEP buying health insurance. |

Yes. They have much of their money tied up in the stock market. If those stocks go down, Blue Cross has less operating capital. Blue Cross will not tell you what stocks it holds. A lot is riding on the stock market right now.. |

No one can tell you for sure.
But health insurance is something many people have and many people use.
Insurance companies are also regulated by the state (Department of Insurance) and have very strict financial guidelines. It was the investment arm of AIG that got into trouble - the insurance company was fine.
In general - insurance companies are usually pretty stable. I can't tell you anything specific about BCBS. But they probably have a pretty great employee health plan as part of their benefits. |

I heard from a BCBS MN employee that they have been operating in the red for a few years now, it could be different in other states. I work for an HMO and we are doing great. I don't think the recession will cause much of a dip in people getting insurance and even if we were to move to a drastic universal healthcare system there will still need to be insurance companies to administer those plans. Ask the department you're looking at how often they have turnover and if they see any downsizing of that area in the future. |
