My place got gutted, thousands in damage in hurricane Wilma and FEMA gave nada! You can't rely on them. |

As long as the area is designated a federal disaster area. But you should be aware, the assistance from the Feds is in the form of loans that have to be repaid. In my opinion, you're insane if you live anywhere near a fault line without earthquake insurance- nothing like losing your house and having to pay off that mortgage, and having to take out a loan to rebuild and have to pay for that too... |

FEMA has a fund for emergency repairs, but not for rebuilding. |

Some assistance perhaps but not much. You should consider endorsing your home policy to include earthquake coverage. It's not usually that costly but again the rates vary from company to company. Call your agent or your insurance company directly for a quote! There was a small earth quake in North Carolina recently! You just never know when and where things like this can happen. |

Probably not, if you live in California you should have the kind of insurance you need to be prepared for any thing that is going to happen. You know it will happen some day, just not when, so you buy insurance for that possibility. So probably not. They would send medical and basic needs to you via the Red Cross and the National Guard , but that would be it.
Unless you live in a place where the possibility is there, and the people know about it and live there anyway. And it just happens to be the party state of the union. Even if you were told days in advance to leave because it was going to be a killer of a disaster, and you choose to stay and get wiped out , they would help you in that case. And they would keep on giving to you in that case even after it was obvious you were riding a gravy train and had no intention of getting off.
If you catch my drift. |

earthquake coverages now have been reduced since january 2006. The Calif Earthquake authority has broadened their coverage in which you can choose and select the coverages that you want only. you don't have to get the whole package, meaning you can have a cea insurance coverage that you feel necessary for your need only at an affordable price. all you need is the reconstruction allowance and personal contents covg. you can saty with family members if you are displaced and while your house is in construction. hope it helps. Why wait for help when you can help your own self. Be independent, if you can afford to pay your mortgage, you can afford earthquake losses too, only i fyou are prepared. |

As stated earlier they will most likely provide some assistance but not much. Any large amounts of money received from FEMA will be in the form of loans.
Many people don't get Earthquake insurance because the deductible scares them off (i.e. $30,0000 or more) but remember you will not be required to pay that upfront like car insurance. The deductible will be reduced from your claim payment. It is much easier to get a loan for the remaining $30K then owe the lender to total loan balance.
Pay for the EQ coverage, you will thank yourself if anything happens. |

Well, there's no guarantee. But look at what FEMA did for Katrina victims - gave 'em debit cards so they could go to the strip bars in Houston on the taxpayer's dollar. |
