Will this be covered in my home contents insurance?
I have recently taken up contents insurance through Direct line.

A few days ago, I was taking my washing from the machine, and realised I had left my MP3 Player in my pocket.

I have left the player in a box, with a bag of silica gel, in a warm environment but it seems dead. The player is a Creative Vision:M 30gb and to replace it would cost around £140.

Does anyone know if this would be covered on my contents insurance, or would it be a waste of time bothering direct line. I have read the documents that came with the policy but I couldnt find a satisfactory answer.

Thanks.

if you have to pay an excess..might not be worth it. you have nothing to lose by ringing them & asking as all policies are different.

This would come under accidental damage, this is an extra feature with some home insurance policies or an added extra. If I were you I would call the insurer and see if your policy covers this or not, also check your excess you may find the hassle is not worth it depending what your excess is set at.

I don't think that leaving an MP3 Player in your pocket and then putting that item of clothing in a washing machine constitutes accidental damage, but rather more accurately negligence. You certainly couldn't present these set of circumstances to an insurance company and expect it to be a valid claim.

ricky
probably but check your excess

gemma r
if your insurance covers accidental damage then you should be covered

stormydays
All policies are different and the only way you will find out is by reading it thoroughly. I know you said you have read it but did you read the entire chapters relevant to you?...its not just the 'certificate' you should have

If you pay for accidental damage your possibly covered but the excess is likely to be higher than the player is worth

mark_2005_london
i agree it might be covered if you have accidental damage cover but you might find the excess is between £50 and £100 so you wouldn't get back enough to buy a new one.

If it is less than a year old then it might still be under guarantee - so you could dry it out totally until there is no trace of moisture then take it back to the shop and say it stopped working......dont tell them about the washing machine bit!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You get ripped off by major companies, so you might as well rip em back.....

In the US - contents coverage is generally a "named peril" policy.

That means - that in order for it to be covered - the cause of the damage has to specifically named in the policy. Generally, perils include things like - fire, lighting, windstorm, hail.

It does not sound like this loss would fall under any of the named perils. And since it's super bowl time - if you are moving your flat screen tv for your super bowl party and drop it - that damage is not covered either.

Gambit
It depends on what type of coverage you have: All Risk or Named Perils. If it's the former, maybe. If it's the latter, no.
Also I would be surprised if your claim is above your deductible. If it is it wouldn't be by much, so you would receive back very little. Add that to the fact that you would be losing out on any claims free discount (or even the possibility of being dropped by your insurer altogether on renewal) means it's unlikely you would come out ahead.

Angel Insure
Doesn't sound like being covered by content insurance. At least in US or Canada, it won't be covered. If it's damaged by fire, or stolen, then you can claim it... but not in your washing machine!

If you have accidental damage cover on your policy then it should be covered. (At least the decent insurance companies I deal with would cover it - subject to excess)

If you have a standard 'new for old' policy then it won't.

(And of course I bet Direct Line have a £100 excess anyway)

Just claim, if they don't pay up, go somewhere else next year, they would'nt deserve your custom.

only if it was specified on you policy

maybe try telling Direct line a white lie, ie a story that is more likely to get you covered.
