With health insurance, what is the difference in copays and deductibles?

perfects_paradox
A deductible is a set amount that you have to pay out of pocket before your insurance company begins to pay.

A co-pay is an amount, either flat rate or percentage of office visit, that you're responsible for at each visit.

Deductible is what the insure company deducts from the actual claim account(as a part of administrative expenses).

Copays: Assume that you have taken auto insurance under two insurers for different amounts. If you make a claim, then you will be paid the actual amount of loss in the form of pro rata.Assume you are insured for $1000 under insurer A and insured for $1500 under insurer B and a loss of $2000 occurs, then A will pay you (1000/2500)times your loss and B will pay (1500/2500)times your loss.

a co-pay is like 20 dollars for a dr.visit,15 for a prescription.a deductible is the amount you pay before the insurance pays anything.

Copays are a set amount that are paid for basic services - ie, $20 for a doctor's visit, $100 for an ER visit, etc. The deductible is the out of pocket amount that the insured is responsible for in a calendar year. Unless your plan specifically states so, copays never apply to your deductible, ie, even if you pay a $100 hospital copay, you are still responsible for your entire deductible.

For example, if you have a $1000 deductible and a $100 ER copay, you are responsible for the first $1100 total of that visit.

You also have to be careful of your maximum out of pocket, which is usually 2 or 3 times your deductible. This applies when you use services that do not apply to your deductible. For a list of these services, see your plan's schedule of benefits.

I hope this helps!

co pay is what you pay when you go to see a doctor, you usually copay $15-$20 toward the office visit, your insurance gets billed for the rest. The deductable might be something like your dental plan. You have a $250 deductable. You go in and have a procedure. You will pay your co-payment for the appointment, plus, you might have a portion of a deductable for something insurance doesn't cover, like they pay for part of it, not all of it. The part they don't would be applied toward your deductable.

Long story short--we all take it in the shorts when it comes to insurance.

A co-pay is the amount you pay each time you use a service - like a Doctor's visit, Rx, etc.

A deductible is the amount you must spend BEFORE the insurance makes any payments - so if you have a $500 deductible, the first $500 of medical expenses are out of your pocket.

A copay is a set amount that you pay every time you visit the doctors office (for example...it could be $20), and your insurance will pick up the rest. But a deductible is totally different. You need to met that certain amount that you insurance has set for you (for example...it could be $100), and your insurance will pick up anything after that deductible amount. Now, when you visit your doctor, you will get a bill in the mail from them that you will obiviously need to pay. It's supposed to work out that you won't have to pay anything to your doctor again for the rest of the year, but only after you meet your deductible amount. Hopefully I explained it okay to you.

A copay is what you pay when you see the doctor/dentist. A deductible is how much out of pocket you will have to pay before the insurance starts picking up the bill. You are only responsible for the deductible once a year I believe. (every time your insurance is renewed)

skynickie
Copay---the amount you pay to your Doctor upfront, this usually is considered your copay.
Deductibles is an amount set by the insurance company that must be paid before they start to pay. Usually if you have a deductible the amount you pay each time your visit a Doctor is applied to your deductible
