Would a home owner's insurance policy cover...?
Would a typical home owner's insurance policy cover a house whose foundation is sinking?
Additional Details
Maybe I should clarify. My mother has owned the house for about 15 years. It's been insured this entire time. She's recently found out that the house is sinking. The question isn't if a new policy can be placed on a home--it's if an exsisting policy would be able to help out.

Unfortunately, no Homeowners policy will cover foundation issues. What you're referring to is also called "settling" and is specifically excluded.

Most likely not, a Homeowners policy covers losses that are sudden and accidental. Sinking isnt sudden and all HO policies exclude losses to the foundation itself.

Insurance covers sudden events only, such as fires, not gradual ones, such as you describe. Sorry.

However, collapse may be covered, even if it results from the sinking foundation.

mbrcatz
No. Foundations/sinking/settling is excluded on every homeowners policy I've ever seen.

Queen B
No, movement of earth, which is what is probably causing it, is excluded. contrary to the above, even if a "flood" caused it, its not covered...lI hope we have ALL learned from Hurricane Katrina..FLOOD IS NEVER COVERED ON A HOME POLICY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

justwondering
That is a question for your insurance agent. The water main to our building burst right outside the wall blasting up the asphalt - sorry it wasn't covered, only from the walls in. So it really is best to get the facts spelled out to you by your agent.

10 years is about the limit for construction defects to be covered by the builder. You are on your own. Sorry

Jill
Not usually; unless there was a flood or something that caused it; but then only if you have flood insurance. Homeowners insurance does not usually cover things like termites and shifting of foundations.

Probably not

no. usually your homeowner's insurance will not cover a sinking foundation....unless it was caused by mother nature. read you insurance policy. look for "perils covered" or call your agent.
