Up There | Would i need to switch health care providers if i'm moving to another state? |
Before i move i was just wondering if it was necessary for me to switch health care providers if i move to another state. but the thing is, i'm the only one moving to another state, while the rest of my family is still in my current state. i'm under 18 right now so my parents are the ones who's incharge of the health plan. but once i move how will it affect me? Additional Details My current provider is HealthNet in CA, and i'm moving to Florida. |

It really depends on your policy. With an HMO, for instance, you will generally be limited to a specific service area (ie. your state). However, you will still be covered for urgent and emergency care while out of state. So, if you are going to school in FL and have an HMO, you will still be covered should anything unforeseen happen, and you can just wait for winter or summer break to schedule any routine care back at home.
If you are covered under a PPO or POS plan, you will have out of network benefits. You will still be covered for the same services while in FL as you would at home, but it may cost you a little more. Generally with these types of plans, out of network services will be subject to deductible and coinsurance. Also, if the provider is not contracted with your insurance, they are not required to submit the bill. They may ask that you pay up front and submit to the insurance company for reimbursement yourself.
You should call the # on your insurance card to find out your policy type and exact benefits. |

It depends on your Health Care Provider.
If it's an HMO and it's local to your area, then even though you're "covered" while in another state, their won't be any providers for you to use; thus making coverage useless.
If it's a national HMO, then you have no problems at all.
If it's a PPO, then you have no issues at all. You can use both in or out-of-network doctors.
You'll need to ask your parents about your plan. |

The best thing is to contact the insurer and see what they will do. IF they don't have anything set up for Florida, if you're going off to college (not sure why else you'd be leaving your parents), then your college should offer health insurance. Another alternative is that you could get a health insurance plan through a place like ehealthinsurance.com where you can search for what's available where you will be.
Your parents surely pay extra to have you on their plan, so if they took you off, they'd probably help you with the premium for a new plan.
Also, sometimes you change your mind or companies change where they do business, so some places like State Farm offer short-term health plans, which can be for a year.
You are smart to want to remain covered with something though.
Good luck. |

More than likely, yes, you will need to switch. But, since you have no control over that at this point, your current insurance will work for emergency care. You won't be able to do routine care out of state, but if you get sick while away from home, call member services and they'll direct you to get care. |

Because you are still under 18, if you are going off to college, then most insurance carriers will still carry you under your parent's plan until the age of 19 as long as you are in school full time. Your parents definately need to check with the insurance company to see what their requirements are. |
