dickery | Wouldn't it be cheaper to just buy the uninsured health insurance from the private sector? |
The price tag for the current health care proposal is $900 billion over 10 years. That works out to an average of 90 billion a year. The main objective of the proposal (presumably) is to provide coverage for the 45 million Americans who currently do not have health insurance.
So... a quick look at the math:
90,000,000,000 / 45,000,000 = 2,000
That comes out to just over $166 per month per uninsured individual.
By comparison, I pay around $200 per month through my group medical insurance at work for my family of four and that includes a prescription drug plan.
Wouldn't it be cheaper and more efficient to just purchase private insurance through a large group plan for all 45 million of the currently uninsured?
What am I missing here? |

The difference is that would make perfect sense. We know Congress & the Senate could not siphon off their fair share.
and they have NEVER passed a bill like that. |

You pay around $200 per month either (a) because your employer is paying most of the cost, or (b) because your group consists mostly of individuals with relatively low health insurance costs, probably both. |

One problem is, under the old system, the price for coverage for someone with serious preexisting conditions, is - not available. That's right, if you already have cancer, insurance companies won't sell you a policy. In states where they are required to sell it to you, well, a friend of mine pays $2600 per month (she's been battling cancer for about 20 years).
$166 a month, won't COVER the uninsured. The reason you pay ONLY $200 a month, is because your employer is probably kicking in about $250 a month. And most of the people you work with, are going to be relatively healthy.
Most of the uninsured, are NOT going to be healthy. Of your 45mil, about half of them are here, ILLEGALLY. Allegedly, we're not covering illegals. About half the remainder, can get on a plan like yours at work. It's that last quarter that's so problematic.
Consumer Reports says, in 2007, we incurred, on average, almost $7,000 in medical bills for every man, woman, and child here in the USA. That works out to, AT BEST, maybe $600 a month, to break even. Factor in the fact that the majority of uninsureds are less healthy than average, even $1,000 a month likely won't cover them.
Then, you've got the "bottom line". No matter how much - or how little - anyone charges for health insurance, the politicians and media have demonized the insurance industry to the point where, ANY money is too much. Sure, we can pay $150 a month for a cell phone, but for health insurance? $150 a month is OUTRAGEOUS! |

Besides the already mentioned fact that your employer subsidizes part of your insurance, you neglect to consider that the price of all insurance is going to go UP "because" of the health care plan. That is due to increased coverage with no lifetime dollar limits, covering preexisting conditions, increased taxes on medical supplies, increased reporting required from insurance companies, etc.
And why do you think the government should hand out money to people who can afford to buy insurance, but chose not to? One of the silliest things I heard was some woman complaining that medicaid or something would not cover her meds because she made too much money. People should pay their own way unless they can't. |

You pay around $200 per month either (a) because your employer is paying most of the cost, or (b) because your group consists mostly of individuals with relatively low health insurance costs, probably both. I worked for an employer that paid over $400 per month for group health insurance for each single person without a family (and presumably more for families). Also, many of those who are currently uninsured are in worse health, so putting them into a group would further increase the cost of group health insurance for everyone in that group, perhaps to more than $1,000 per month per person. |

The cost of the bill isn't to buy uninsured people health insurance. You're just missing how the bill was constructed and what it does. The expectation is that MORE people would be covered, but still not necessarily everybody. |

The fact that your employer is subsidizing your health care costs...
As a single individual who buys private insurance from an HMO my premimums are over $600 a month for just me. And they go up at least 10% per year. |

That's what the plan does ... buys insurance through insurance companies. A lot of the 45 million uninsured are people with conditions the insurance companies do not want to cover. |

Under the "reform bill", that's where the uninsured ARE going to buy insurance come 2014 - from private insurers. The reform bill does not create a new government health insurance system.
The reason your group plan is so cheap is that your employer pays a good portion of the premium. That $200 per month is NOT the full premium cost. |

I priced individual health insurance (medical only; no dental) locally about 1 year ago. The premium charged for family coverage (a couple and 1+ children) was over $3,400...
That is $3,400 PER MONTH! Sorry to shout. But, that pricing is outrageous. The health insurance carrier is a well regarded one used by corporate group plans. The pricing within the plan is excellent. But, the premiums make you wonder if you’d be better off self insuring with some sort of catastrophe coverage.
For those who have lost their health insurance in unemployment, there is COBRA, which costs the former employee more than (s)he paid while an employee. But, if and when the person falls off COBRA after 18 mos, the price of individual health insurance is stratospheric. The pricing I quoted is real. I know people on this. It costs over $40,000 per year. For someone who is unemployed, that is a pretty large chunk of change, in addition to mortgage/escrow payments, and all of the other costs of daily life.
So, be happy you are employed and celebrate the fact you are on a group insurance plan, which allows the insurers to spread the costs over a large pool of insureds. And, remember that the employer typically picks up a big part of your health insurance premium. |
