are there insurances in the spatial industry ?
launches are not the most reliable things on earth, and payloads are reaaaaaally expensive... so how does it work ? are there some insurance companies that would accept taking such a risk ?
Additional Details
excuse my english, i'm not a native speaker. by spatial industry, I mean organizations that deal with rocket launches. let me give an example :
arianespace is the company that launches ariane5 rockets. if the rocket explodes with a communication satellite - let's say arabsat, the one being fired right now -, does the customer from arianespace get his money back ? and who gives it ? arianespace, or an insurance company ?

These are government projects, and government backed - and government insured, and subject to governmental immunity laws.

The space insurance industry dates from the 1960s, when it appeared as a response to the development of commercial communications satellites. Aviation insurance specialists issued the first policies, which featured low premiums and compensation that was paid on the provision of a minimum of evidence.

In the late 1960s and the early 1970s, space insurance markets changed dramatically when a substantially larger number of insured launches failed, causing underwriters to suffer heavy losses. Brokers began to specialize in space insurance, and some of them hired space experts as consultants or staff members in an attempt to better understand and predict the space industry.

This technical approach to underwriting was by no means universally accepted, however, and many underwriters continued to use more traditional actuarial methods to make underwriting decisions.

At the beginning of 2007 the Atrium Space Insurance Consortium (ASIC) was formed to specialise in the writing of satellite launch and in-orbit insurance.

ASIC is led by Atrium's Syndicate 609. A further eight Lloyd's syndicates have delegated their space underwriting authority for ASIC to write on their behalf, giving ASIC a line of USD 30m for any one satellite or launch. With all members of the Consortium being Lloyd's syndicates, ASIC benefits from Lloyd's 'excellent' security rating.

ASIC is managed by Atrium Insurance Agency Limited (AIAL), a UK coverholder and a wholly owned subsidiary of Atrium Underwriting Group Limited, authorised and regulated by the Financial Services Authority
