My husband put a huge dent in my SUV, found out we have a $1000 deductible instead of $500. Is it illegal to change the deductible, then get the SUV fixed in say, a week? Is there any way we could get in trouble for this? Any answers from anyone who knows will be helpful! |

Yep, that's classic insurance fraud. You can go to jail, but more likely, you'd just get your policy cancelled on you and have a really hard time finding another one. |

This would be illegal . This would fall under the the category of insurance fraud. The worst that would happen? You'd get denial of coverage from your insurer, followed by a cancellation notice. Following this you'd have to explain to subsequent companies what the fraud was about to get your vehicles covered.
Your hubby wanted to save premium dollars with a higher deductible, now it's time to pay the piper. |

Good advice above.
But to answer your question, the deuctible at the time of loss is what would apply. if you never report it and change your deductible, and claim it in a week, you are sending up HUGE flags. They will investigate. And there are ways to tell how old a dent is.
Then... you can be charged with Insurance Fraud. (Felony).
EIther deal with 1,000 ded. or fix it yourself. If i were you, i'd fix it myself. |

Its people like you that make it difficult for the honest person.
This is just one prime example why rates are so high.
Just remember: What goes around comes around. It will eventually bit you two in the ***. |

If you call your insurance company and ask to change the deductible, it will become effective TODAY - it won't apply to an accident that has already happened.
And yes, you can definitely get into trouble for what you're trying to do. It's called insurance fraud, and people go to jail for it. Pay the $1,000 to get your car fixed and be done with it. That'll be less expensive in the long run. |

This would be insurance fraud, which is a crime. Your chances of getting caught depends on many factors, such as what was hit, who all knows, etc. Sometimes neighbors will rat you out. Also, if you attempt to change your deductible in the middle of a policy term, the company may want to see the vehicle. And if they don't, and you file a claim shortly after that, your claim will be flagged for extra investigation.
Whether you should file a claim depends on the total amount of damage. If the damage is under $1500, just fix it yourself and don't file the claim. If the damage is over $1500, you probably are better off filing the claim. |

Its definitely an offence and you'll be in trouble. The concerned insurance company has the discretion to even investigate into it.And insurance companies have loss adjuster(technical person) who can pinpoint any dent's character means its age. |

Changing coverage for the better and then filing a claim on those coverages raises some eyebrows within the company. As others have mentioned, worst case scenario is they deny the claim and cancel your insurance. Most likely however, they would pay the claim, but non-renew your policy after it expires.
Bottom line, that is alot of hassle to go through for $500. You're much better off just paying the extra amount out of pocket to get it fixed. |

If it were me I wouldn't even report this to the insurance company no matter what my deductible (I'd just fix it myself). If you report this to the insurance company (even if your deductible were $500) they will fix it and may pay you something but then they will put a big red mark on your policy in the computer and when it comes time to renew it they will raise your rates. It'll probably end up costing you more than $500 in the long run anyhow. So, for something minor like this just fix it yourself and don't report it to insurance - insurance (in my mind) is only for major problems. |
