is this deductable correct?
I was driving my friend's car and happened to hit a deer going 70 and totalled it. I told him i would go halves on whatever he needs to help because I felt somewhat responsible. Since it was considered totalled he said the insurance company cut him a check for how much the car was worth ... and there was a deductable of 1000 dollars. this is his third car accident. he's 18, does this sound right? I dont fully trust him because he is always trying to steal money from his job and stuff so I had this notion that he's just telling me that its more than it really is to get money out of me. Thanks he has geico by the way.

If his deductible is $1000, that's actually REALLY CHEAP for totaling a car. Most deductibles for those major types of accidents are higher. But don't take ANYONE'S word for it - including mine. Everyone sets their deductibles to whatever amount they want thus adjusting their insurance premiums. If you don't believe him, just ask to see his insurance policy and the letter from his insurance company asking for that $1000 deductible.

The only parts of this that do not sound right are (1) you said you would pay only 1/2, even though only you and the deer were responsible, and the deer is not paying anything, so he will have to pay 1/2, even though he was not at all responsible, (2) that Geico did not cancel his policy after three accidents before the age of 19, and (3) that you were driving 70. The rest does sound right. In particular, the statement "the insurance company cut him a check for how much the car was worth ... and there was a deductable of 1000 dollars" does sound right.

~~Many people (myself included do carry $1,000 deductible because we have savings to cover it and it saves so much on premiums. SO he could be right, but if you don't trust him, just have him show you the paperwork or his policy.~~

mbrcatz
It's quite possible that his deductible is $1,000. The $500 deductible is more common, and there's a slim chance it's $250 or $100.

But the BEST way for you to find out, is to ask to see a copy of the policy, or a copy of the claims accounting letter which spells out what the deductible is.
