freeworld37
life insurance question?
My dad is 68 years old and have been diagnosed with colon cancer. He notified me in May 2009 but I am unsure when he actually found out he had cancer. He has a pre need funeral policy for $5,000 which has a value of $1100 right now. I have found a guaranteed insurance policy for $15,000. The guaranteed insurance policy only pays 125% if less than two years and the full amount thereafter. I am not sure how much time he has left to live. He has chosen not to take chemo/radiation. I personally believes he should cancel the pre need funeral policy and go with the guaranteed insurance policy. I am thinking either way I will be stuck between a rock and a hard place. He doesn't have any stocks, bonds or assets that can be sold to help should he pass away. He does not want to be cremated. Should both policies be kepted? Should he only have the guaranteed insurance policy. I need answers really quick. Thank you very much in advanced for your responses.

You are in a tough place, most if not all have the two year restriction you mention. You may need to find an economical undertaker. I suggest you start looking now and see what arrangements you can make. This way you won't be under a lot of pressure if your dad were to die.

If you cancel the policy that he has know, you are effectively throwing away $3900. Why would you prefer $1100 now to $5000 when he dies? Definitely keep that policy

The guaranteed issue policy is probably also a good deal. You get 125% in under two years or the full amount whenever he dies. Either way, it seems profitable.

I would say keep both policies if you can.

I'm going with Stephen on this one because the 125% (or 25% return in 24 months) tax free is pretty darn good.

Honey, you're not reading all the fine print. If he lives less than two years, it pays 125% of WHAT YOU PAY IN. At best. IF they take him, and they'll ask three questions.

Additionally, are you confusing a PREPAID funeral, with an insurance POLICY? If not, you're confusing CASH value with DEATH benefit.

But you're nuts, if you're going to cancel ANY insurance on someone who's got cancer and is choosing not to treat it. Just don't put any eggs in the basket of a guaranteed issue insurance policy actually PAYING anything. Because it won't. Go back, and read everything more carefully.

Or maybe you just need to have a sit down with him, and talk to him about how to plan this funeral . . .and bring your pastor along.

Sorry for all your troubles. This can't be an easy time. I'd advise NOT changing anything for him - but taking some time to make YOUR life insurance plans, while you are still healthy.
