With less than $10,000, you should stay away from individual stocks.
The brokerage fees eat up too much of the gains.
If you can get into a no-load mutual fund with only $1,000, that's your best bet.
What would I do with the money?
1) Pay off debts.
2) Save it for emergencies.
3) Only after I have 6 months expenses covered with cash in the bank, would I start looking at investing.

Maybe consider this: only invest money (in stocks) that you can afford to lose.
The point is that investing in stocks is risky. $1000 is not a lot of capital. Are you prepared to take that risk?

SO here it is, just for all of you, with no spam attached. NTGR (netgear) is predicted to explode soon. I just saw a pr about them too, they recently had their products shipped to Walmart for sale. I bought their stock with the full 1000 a few weeks ago and I am making money. :-)

Jeff hit this one on the head. With a $1000 I'd be asking which stock I should but (not stocks). $1000 is pretty thin even if you only buy one.

with such a short time horizon and lack of knowledge of your risk tolerance, I wouldnt know what to reccommend you. figure out your risk you are willing to take.. you dont have much time for a major loss to correct itself
