Mandy Cat | 401K question? |
My company is no longer going to match my contribution..they're not contributing anything. Do I benefit more by leaving it with my company, or moving it to an IRA account, or.....well, you tell me.
What should I do? ( I have roughly 9K) |

I would move it to a roll-over IRA. More choices and likely lower fees. tba |

Check your plan details. Usually, you cannot transfer or roll over your 401(k) account until you leave the company. If you can move it, its up to you. |

You can't move it unless you quit or they terminate the plan. Deciding to not continue to match deferrals isn't an acceptable IRS reason for a distributable event. |

Companies that match contributions; that's pretty rare.
You have to weigh in whether or not your 401k is doing well. During this time of recession, most 401k's aren't doing so hot, but if yours in, then you may want to stick with it.
Moving to an IRA, which is what I did Troweprice because I have the ability to handle it more.
Now, you don't get penalized unless you touch the money, so you have to make sure the companies to an instant ira transfer. Always better to go talk with your human resources department about it first since they know a lot better. |

I would find out whether the company controls the 401K or it is a separate account in YOUR name. As long as it is a separate account in your name and the comany has nothing to do with it, it really doesn't matter.
Otherwise move it to an IRA where you have more control and protection against the company doing things with your 401k id the have problems or file bankruptcy. |

I would look at how much your return has been with the 401k. If they've done a good job with it and the returns are good then keep it there. Most likely it isn't returning as much as it could. I would transfer the money to an IRA if you can avoid getting penalized. |

The following assumes that you actually can move it in accordance with your plan documents. You may not be able to move your 401(k) until after you leave thus it may be a moot issue. If you choose to take money from it, make sure it is sent directly to the broker; do not receive a check as there are harsh tax penalties in that case.
Move it to the IRA by trustee to trustee transfer to Fidelity or Zecco. If you choose Fidelity, you may need to do a trustee-to-trustee transfer either to Scottrade or to Vanguard. In the first instance, you would want to transfer $4,000 to Vanguard to buy VTSMX and in the second instance, you may want to send $3,500 to Scottrade to buy VALIX and VLEOX. That way you have an entire investment universe to choose from. I am assuming the risk profile of someone who is 45, with a moderate risk tolerance, and a good emergency fund.
The following funds seem interesting:
Fidelity Four in One Index Fund (FFNOX) - $2,500
Fidelity Intermediate (FTHRX) - $2,500
Vanguard Total Stock Market Index Fund (VTSMX) - $4,000
About 68% stocks.
OR
Fidelity Four-in One Index Fund (FFNOX) - $2,500
Value Line Income & Growth Fund (VALIX) - $2,750
Value Line Emerging Opportunities (VLEOX) - $1,000
Fidelity Balanced Fund (FBALX) - $2,750
About 71% equities
OR
Open a Zecco account and pay $30 + $30 every February.
Buy (amounts are approximations and could go higher or lower depending on market action). Trade at your own risk.
VTI - $1,850 - about 13 shares
DIA - $1,850 - about 15 shares
QQQQ - $700 - about 16 shares
IOO - $1,500 - about 20 shares
VPL - $1,000 - about 16 shares
VWO - $300 - about 3 shares
BND - $1,000 - about 13 shares
IEI - $1,000 - about 9 shares
