£5,000 savings...what to do?
I've got 5000 savings and dont know whats best?
Im 22 and at present work on cruiseships and plan to do so until new year...and i earn less than 6k. Well the pittance that i earn is tax free anyway.

So what do i do. Put 3k into an ISA??? Then so what with the 2k?

I'm hoping that by the end of the year i'll have another £1500 to add.
Thanks!

Well you should really talk to an Independent Financial Advisor for proper help but what I would do is this.
1. Invest £3K in an ISA - even though you don't pay much/any tax you will avoid savings tax which you would otherwise need to claim back and when you do start to earn your interest will still be tax free.
2. Invest the rest in a high interest account - depending on how quickly you might need the money then you could chose instant access or a 30 or 90 day account - ie the amount of notice you have to give in order to avoid any penalty on your interest. If you pay no tax then lodge a R85 form (see link) with the bank/organisation so you get gross not net interest.

Once April comes around and you have another £1.5K to add take out another ISA.

The Mail on Sunday newspaper (see link) has a financial section which lists the accounts with the best interest rates in the various categories.

Save it and wait a few years for the next dip in share prices, then invest it. At the moment most investments are at fairly high levels so this isnt a great time to invest.

If you do invest maybe land prices are going to rise over the next few years, these are still fairly cheap in the uk at present. Perhaps invest in a company that buys land.

First put £3,000 in an a mini cash ISA and the balance in a savings a/c. Next April transfer what is in the SA to another ISA.

After the two ISAs, put £1,000 lots in index tracking unit trusts.

When you have enough for a deposit, buy some property. There is nothing like the feeling of owning the roof over your head, nor as profitable.

I think you are talking about money in pounds but I don't know. Anyhow if you can put some, Not All, in the market. Mutual Funds are best because if one part of it falls you aren, pardon me screwed. Also take care to put some in a savings account for a rainy day. I had a few medical issues as of late and I praise God had put money in savings so I used this to pay for stuff.

Which cruise ship or line do you work on? I have been on Princess, Holland and Royal Carribean.
