Buy her a cubic zirconium instead for a couple of hundred. She won't know the difference and you will be $4800 to the good. Then you can invest the money for the long term and improve your chances of making some money. Maybe COP

For this time period do not do it. You have a better chance of losing ground than gaining. Put it in a money market account and get the 4% plus apy and be happy. |

I would suggest you stick with a money market account or bank CD's (certificates of deposit). I say this simply because the market is a hard place to be in right now, and it'd be a shame for you to lose all of your money, and end up buying your girlfriend a $0.25 ring from one of those coin toy machines at the grocery store. Play it safe, CD's earn 3 to 4 percent, and are FDIC insured up to $100,000, meaning there is no chance for you to lose your investment. Just make sure that your maturity date is before you plan on purchasing the ring, otherwise you will pay a penalty of approximately 10% for early withdrawal. I always encourage people that are saving money for something particular to save the money in a safe, interest-earning account rather than risk it in the market. Also, four months is a very short time period, and you would have limited time to make up any losses you could incur. I would strongly urge against putting this money in the market, especially in the current market conditions, as it is very hard to predict where the market will be in four months, unlike normal economic times, which I would potentially advise differently. Just my opinion, I hope it helps.
Best of luck with the ring!

i'd suggest an paypal money market account, although rates are low right now, but they're paying 3.9% currently, their interest compounds monthly, (.039 x YOUR CURRENT BALANCE)/12 would be the first months interest payment, then a little higher each month thereafter w/ compounding interest. |

You might be gettin her a ring from a gumball machine if you try investing in a single stock.
Stick with CD or savings.
$5000 should buy her a beautiful ring anyway. There is no need to get ridiculous. I know you love her, but try to use some common sense.
Congrats |

Go online to www.bluenile.com. That was a high-flying stock, and you can get her a really nice diamond for less than you will pay your local jeweler, because their overhead is much less. It is a reputable company and you will save $$$. I know this isn't what you were asking for, but it is better than risking your capital!!! Have a happy engagement! |
