Nordstrom started business in 1901 in Seattle. Their main business for many years was just selling shoes. Then as they got bigger ans slowly expanded to eight stores in the west and started to diversify their product line. The company went public in the 1970's. Because they went public, and shareholders started to purchase a stake in the company, Nordstrom had more money to invest into the business, so they opened more stores and slowly and quietly become one of the most recognized names in the nation.
Abercrombie and Fitch started their business as a outdoor sportswear company. They did that for many years until around 1983 the company got bought out by a bigger company called "The Limited."
The Limited decided to fix the brand by overhauling the clothing line and aim it towards the 18-22 year old crowd and started to open stores around the country and became very popular. Eventually The Limited spun off Abercrombie and Fitch and continue their success today. |

First of all
They are names and retail stores - that are part of Huge Corporations.
How they started .. I do not know the answer.
But if you really want to know start by going further into the Corporations who Own them.
For instance - Nordstrom's is not just Nordstroms. It's a huge entity that has many subsidiary retail outlets and stores.
Its called a Corporation -which is fed by many companies under one governed entity.
Example - Victoria's Secret, Bath and Body Works -
