Read:
1. How to Make Money in Stocks by William O'Neil.
2. Technical Analysis of Stock Trends by Edwards and Magee.
3. Reminiscences of a Stock Operator by Edwin Lefavre.
4. Market Wizards and New Market Wizards by Jack Schwager.
These will get you most of the way. The rest is actual experience in the market. |

The Intelligent Investor would be my choice as well, but I prefer the original work of Mr. Graham as opposed to the "rewritten work" from others. The one I own is a reproduction of the original 1949 work, with a foreword written by John C. Bogle. My next preference of this work would be the one produced by Warren Buffett.
A second book I would suggest is Security Analysis, again by Benjamin Graham. I would suggest you read the former work first, because it gives you an insight into Mr. Graham's thinking on how to generally select an appropriate issue. It also forces you to decide whether you will be a defensive investor or an enterprising one. If you find yourself as one of the latter, then you will find Security Analysis to be benefitial. |

I would reccomend everything you can read on technical charting and candlesticks at your local libary. A good start would be to read toni turners , A guide to short term trading for beginers. You should also visit the chart school at www.stockcharts.com |

Experience is the best teacher... right? If you have any kind of idea of what's involved then log on to http://top10traders.com/
It's a site where you can create and trade in a fantasy portfolio...and watch the results of about 1700 other investors...you'll find out how your srategies work... and not lose any real cash in the ( learning) process.
As far as just " info"..." stockpickr" and " investorvillage" have boards and forums where you can ask thousands of different people about just about anything....or just " read and learn". |

"The Intelligent Investor" by Benjamin Graham & Jason Zweig
Graham taught Warren Buffett at Columbia U. Lots of old references, but great perspective. It might scare you out of some aspects of investing, but that might not be all bad.
"Lean to Earn: A beginner guide to the basics ..." by Peter Lynch. Intended for high school kids, but if you are a beginner you should check it out. The history chapter is interesting and valuable.
"The Future for Investors: Why the ..." by Jeremy Siegel. This is a gem to the extent that it should help you distinguish long term investing from speculating. Also, which companies are good long term investments.
"Mad Money: Sane investing in an insane world" by Jim Cramer. It gives a great perspective on the modern investing world that is dominated by hedge funds and mutual funds. Don't take Cramer's world view of a great investor as gospel, but learn a little bit about how the big boys operate. |

Rule #1 by Phil Town is good beginner's book. It depends on your investment or trading style. For example if you want to know how Warren Buffet invests in the stock market, start reading materials on him such as The New Buffetlogy. Both are good books based on Buffet's investment style.
There are many styles out there, again it depends on what you trade in (stocks, futures, options, etc) and what type of trader or investor are you (day trader, swing, long term)? Ask yourself this first and then you can go to Amazon.com to search for books that go with your style. The reviews on Amazon helps as well. |

I'd second growth_stocks' answer.
In addition, you may also try joining a stock picking group to learn from traders who are doing it right now:
http://finance.groups.yahoo.com/group/TradingZoom/ |
|

EZ Traders
 |
I third growth-stocks99, and would add:
Trend Following by Michael Covel, Way of the Turtle by Curtis Faith, and Come Into My Trading Room by Alexander Elder
Another Yahoo group: http://finance.groups.yahoo.com/group/eztraders/
And a website: www.ez-traders.com
As much as you may want to learn trading by just reading, it is like a sport. You can't just read a book on how to hit a baseball and then step up to the plate and hit. You need to experience it. Even Tiger Woods has a coach. |

It says here that Jim Cramer's books are all highly recommended reading for those who want to trade sucessfully. |
