There are many things that are contributing towards the NA stock market. The best way to summarized it, however, would be to say that the stock market is reflecting consumers' attitudes toward the market in general. With all of this talk about recession and an unbstable economy, people don't feel as confident investing in stocks.

Additionally, with a grim outlook ahead, many people are saving their money as opposed to spending it because they are not sure of what is goign to happen in the future...this is why every is crying for the Fed's to lower interest rates even more, that way people won't get as much return on their savings and it would spur them to spend more now.

I hope this helps

It's called market volatility. We have uncertainty in our next election as well as uncertainty with some financial institutions who lent money to homeowners who couldnt afford mortgages. It will be volatile for a while. There are alot of good stocks on sale for those who like to buy low.

We are in a bear market and the U.S. is facing a recession. The U.S. mortgage/housing crisis have left the Wall Street giants and the biggest commerical banks with no liquidity (no money). Credit and loans are needed to drive this economy. In addition, the consumer is strapped. Retail and restraunts are suffering huge losses. Home prices are falling, the consumer isnt paying their debt, U.S. companies are not liquid....and at the same time: unemployment and inflation numbers are coming in quite alarming

At the very root of the problem is people who wanted to buy more house than common sense SHOULD have told them they could afford, and mortgage lenders who willing lent those people more money (at a variable rate) than THEY should have know the borrowers could afford. So now that interest rates are creeping back up (from historic lows), people are having trouble paying their mortgages, and are defaulting on the loans or just abandoning their homes. Those people are hurting, the banks are hurting (losing LOTS of money), the banks stock prices are tumbling, and that is having a ripple effect on everything. Because the world is all interconnected now, financially, the unsteady market in the USA is creating fear elsewhere, and investors everywhere are over-reacting.

But it'll be okay...

(Or it won't...)

I am not one of the experts you specified, but basically the market goes up with greed and down with uncertainty. Investors hate uncertainty more than actual monetary problems. I have to believe the markets will come back when uncertainty is reduced (it's never eliminated).

Because of global concerns regarding a very likely US recession, investors are getting panicky and selling. Do not worry. It isn't uncommon for events like this to occur. It always, always comes back.

Because the United States represents a significant piece of the global economic pie, fears of a pending recession are bound to create some significant volatility, especially after such a significant run of positive market performance.

To put things in context, look at where the markets are compared to where they were after 9/11. It's not all that bad....

The dollar is weakening and the housing market is bad.

But the real reason is more sellers than buyers. Too many people think we trade the companies performance. We don't we trade what people think about the companies performance.

To make a really good return it is best to learn technical analysis. And trade what you see.

This website is one of the best for teaching technical analysis.

The US and it's citizens are up to their ears in debt, They all owe too much money on their homes and credit cards.

Sub-prime loans are being revalued and foreclosures are rising. There is a liquidity problem with the financial markets, and qualifications needed to borrow money are getting restrictive. The consumer has to stop spending. and since their spending is 66% of the economy, the US is in Trouble....and since the US economy comprises 55% of world economy, they are in trouble too
