In the old days, words like sin and Satan had a moral certitude. Today, they're replaced with self-help jargon, words like dysfunction and antisocial behavior, discouraging any responsibility for one's actions.
Why should an area like New Orleans be rebuilt in the sections that are below water level considering the natural order of things dictates otherwise. I think you know this fact !
People are demented and simple minded who want to pour money into a area that should actually be used for as a natural perserve for water foul and wildlife. |

I live on an island that has an active volcano and enough earthquakes to keep us a bit nervous. We know bad things could happen and we can't prepare for an earthquake except to build strong homes and pray for good luck.
We also have hurricanes and we get out of the way and seek shelter because we get advance notice just the way those in New Orleans had.... they should have moved out of the way of The oncoming Storm..... those who chose not to are responsible for their own demise.
As for the damaged homes/livelihoods, government should help but victims of the storm should busy helping themselves first and foremost..... helping those in need is okay but not to the point where the citizens become parasitical growths.
I'm sick of the media turning a tragedy into a "blame game" and YES, there was a time our Americans were known as sturdy pioneers who did for themselves, that is our foundation, not being drowned in welfare subsidies.
What can we do for government should be the phrase not what can the government do for us !
President Kennedy spoke those words of wisdom |

unless you live in Holland, it's quite silly purchasing a home below sea level on the strenght that many others are doing it or hoping that the government will help you.
Someone mentioned that Florida is below sea level, I might stand corrected in a little while but it is my belief that only the Dutch did what they did. |

I don’t think this question is really about home buying...Hummm. So on with it.
There is a process in nature called natural selection. This weeds out the weak and allows the rest to grow stronger.
So lets do the math, a storm in coming and there is a predicted storm surge of 25 feet. Your house is 8 feet below sea level. Should you stay in your house? If you answer yes, then I’m glad you will stay. That will just take a few folks off the welfare payroll.
Next Point
If you are renting an apartment for $700 a month, pay for water, electricity, cable, etc. A storm comes and destroys your apartment so now you get to live for free, no rent no utilities, nothing. What incentive do you have to find a place to live and pay for it yourself? Humm.
And lastly
Can I cancel my insurance and just wait for the government to bail me out after a storm, why should I have to pay for it. |

I agree with you 100%. People need to take responsibility for themselves. I understand flood insurance is expensive anywhere near water. But if you cant afford it maybe you need to move somewhere where you dont need it. Im tired of hearing how the goverment failed these people. Everybody was told days in advance to evacuate by the mayor, the govener, and even the president. If my house was taken out by a tornado I can bet that fema wouldnt be over here with a trailer for me to live in. People bitching about it are just looking for a handout. Im glad to know Im not the only one who feels this way. |

Anywhere in Florida is pretty much below water level, and peopl ear estill buying houses here. I think insurance companies should be responsible fo the people that pay them all thier insane rates. |

If you really think about it, THAT is exactly what the government should be for. Taxes should be collected to help other citizens in case of need. They shouldn't be used to pay for congress member's secret apartments or vacation homes. Money collected is used to fix roadways, bridges, etc. How is water damage any different? Granted, it's private property, but it's still what this country is founded on.
The issue here is, people seem to take this for granted and ask more than they should from the government. I don't disagree that a lot Katrina victims have taken advantage, but that was partly the government's fault also. They should have given supplies, not random "debit cards" full of money.
Remember, this country was founded BY and FOR the people. We are a capitalist nation founded on socialist principals (welfare, medicaid, etc) like it or not. |
