kawika1968 | Are Gold Coins a good investment in today's economic climate? |

In today's economic climate, I think so. As I see things, the dollar is poised to decrease farther (with or without inflation). And I believe that Gold coins are better investments than Gold ETFs.
Of course this is just my opinion. Build your own before investing. |

Nobody knows, otherwise, everybody would jump on it. Gold can double its value in a short time, stay the same for 20 years (done it) or go down to half its value (done it).
The so called experts know as much as anybody. |

yes.
but make sure you sell when gold hits $1500-$3000/oz.
for 5,000 years gold was used as a currency. this changed when Nixon removed the dollar from the gold standard.
there is an estimated $100Trillion worth of currencies in circulation and only 5 billion ounces of gold mined. this makes each ounce worth $20,000!!! However, this will only happen if people lose faith in all currencies - not likely to happen any time soon (or even in our lifetimes) but its definitely worth more than $940/oz in the current economic climate
check out the list of recommended gold coins:

I think oil/energy stocks are due for pullback. Gold itself should do well over the next 3-5 years. |

Gold might be a good investment in an inflationary time like this one because it will may hold its value well. In inflationary times, gold seems to hold its purchasing power well - that is, 5 ounces of gold might continue to buy you a decent used car, no matter the inflation level. Gold coins might not be as good an investment, though, and it depends on what you're paying for the gold coins versus the price of gold. Currently, gold is priced at about $930 per ounce (wow!). If the gold coins you're thinking about buying are priced at $300 per quarter-ounce, you're buying for the equivalent of $1,200 per ounce, and that's waaay too expensive. Be careful not to overpay! |

I think collecting gold coins is more of a hobby than an investment.
Because other than the price of the gold, you are also paying for the design of the coin and the process of turning it into a coin shape. Also it is hard to know the quality of the gold until you smelt it.
I would suggest gold ETF if you want to invest in gold. |

Gold was a good investment 5-7 years ago when it could have been had for under $400 an ounce. It's run up so much since then (and actually dropped a bit) that it may not be as good an investment. Try oil or oil stocks. Here's the big difference. Something north of 95% of the gold ever mined is still out there. People don't throw gold out or burn it. It gets recycled over and over again. Because gold is continuously mined and not thrown out or used up, the supply is forever growing. Oil on the other hand we burn millions of barrels EVERY DAY. Demand is growing (especially in China and India) and supplies are constrained. And thanks to the Dumbocrats who will not allow us to drill here in the US it will stay that way for the foreseeable future. The price of oil may come down in the short run, but in the long run it will most certainly go up. |
