Are bio-tech and pharma companies the same thing?
The way I understand it is pharma companies make and sell drugs and biotech companies research how to make the drugs. However, aren't some companies both pharma and bio-tech? I was reading some reports on Genentech and I found it confusing.

Big Bully
I agree with Joe, you picture is hot looking! But in reference to your question, I am going to take a guess, I think little bio companies get most of there money from big pharmaceuticals companies to do research and develop drugs. When these drugs are developed the big company comes in and a buy it from them. Some companies such as Genentech, are big enough to do there own research and market their product.

DNA - Genentech is a little of both as they started out just doing research but now they have products too.

Check out NNBP - its on a tear from 5 cents to 15 cents in just a few days! Not a pharma - a biotech.

It can certainly get confusing. Some companies are referred to as bio-pharma as well. I usually don't concern myself with putting companies under labels. I prefer to spend time researching drug pipelines and company prospects.

http://biotech-news.org/ is a good site to visit for information and analysis of Bio, Pharma, and Bio-Pharma companies.

Best wishes

joe
gotta say that i just don't know~however i do know that you are SMOKIN' HOTT!~~VERY PRETTY WOMAN!!

Mr. Economist
Not really. Bio-tech companies are also often looking to create drugs, but they aren't confined just to develop drugs. They can contribute in a lot of different ways to the quality of life, including improving procedures, technology, and diagnosis techniques.

Pharma companies focus mainly on drug developing.

The biotech industry ranges from companies that make equipment or perform services, to those that actually make pharmaceuticals. For example, Amgen, one of the largest biotech companies is most certainly a pharmaceutical company with massive revenues from the sale of drugs.

Funny you should ask. You pretty much have to check out each company to see what they manufacture. For example, West Pharmaceutical Services Inc. (WST) has nothing to do with drugs. They manufacture plastics used in the medical profession. The name would have me guessing something other than plastics!

Bio-tech can also be the research behind vaccines and medicines - without actually manufacturing the finished product. They are close cousins to the pharmaceutical companies. Each helps the other in development.

By the way, I bought shares of WST when it was $8/share just 4 years ago. It's $42/share now. Solid company.

http://biotech101.org/ is another good website.
