Good Friday is a US exchange holiday.
Back in the days when most brokers strictly followed Christian rules the exchanges took catholic religious holidays off. The fear was that if the a good portion of the brokers didn't show up a panic could happen without much to stop it.
Why do we do this today still. History. Changing the rules of an exchange with international markets, electronic trading, thousands of firms, different trading systems, etc would cost a fortune to execute & coordinate. |

It depends on what type of market you are talking about. Banks and major places like that are. But walmart , grocery stores and department stores should be open. |

Yes, the stock markets are closed in the U.S. (I don't know about in other countries) because it's Good Friday ... the day that celebrates the DEATH of Christ on the cross. This is a day for 'solemn reflection' on why Christ had to die ... and the fact that the stock markets are closed today should make that even MORE important ... there are things more important than money and 'income' ... and Easter is Sunday, when we can all celebrate our chance at a 'new and eternal life' ... and I hope people will go back to the markets on Monday with a bit more in their hearts than greed. |

I don't think so as it is a state holiday.
edit: I'm wrong. The markets are closed today in observance of Good Friday. You can do a search to find the "general" holidays of this year.
I believe banks in Massachusetts are closed but banks in other states are probably open. |
