Are we going into a recession? and what should I do financially?
I was at Target the other day and a lady was talking about the recession that we are headed towards. What should I do? I have a retirement plan, but what else should I do?

Employment rates have been pretty much the same for now. What the problem is with the economy right now is housing market, houses are not selling because our population is not growing at all! There is not enough people out there to buy houses, this is a big problem ! There are millions of abortions , people are not have many babies anymore, getting married older and so many divorces- its destroying our economic system. WE NEED GROWTH! to keep things on track. People are blaming Bush for this? it so unbelievable! He is pro-life! Not selling houses is like the first domino dropping after that more and more will of our businesses with fall! Its very scary! . Vote Republican! Democrats are for abortion! Gay marriage and socialized medicine which all of the above will only drop our growth! good luck!

.
Get your credit cards paid off, but don't destroy them. Just put them away. Try to save as much money as you possibly can and don't spend money unwisely.

Contrary indicator would say when the lady at Target is talking about a recession then it is over already.

Really though there isn't much you can do except make sure you hang onto your job... if we do get higher unemployment then getting real jobs will be harder. I say "real" job cause service industry doesn't count in my book since jobs are so fluid and a zero sum gain IMO.

Make sure your job is well secured because getting a new one could be difficult. Curb spending and increase savings.

----no more questions----
If you have a 401K, move any money you have in stocks or mutual funds to money market funds. Do NOT buy stocks or mutual funds right now.

Cut back on spending because cash is king.

Inverse funds are also good investments.

I agree with the first answer ans also, and regarding jobs, a lot of company are filling bankruptcy or bankruptcy protection, but I think we're in a little bit of a recession.

Invest your retirement funds in a "bear fund" which is a mutual fund that makes money during a recession.

Yes, we are going into a recession. We are already in one, but our goverment wants us to think positively at least until this election is over.

We are in a "bear market" and could be for a long-time. The Fed is going to continue to drop interest rates just like Japan did in the 1990s. If the US market is anything like the Nikkei, the US market is the WORST place to be a buy-and-hold investor. Let's say you started working in Japan in 1989 and added $5000 to your 401K every year... you would still be underwater 18 years later!! That is a taste of what is to come for the U.S. The US market and brokerage firms have "conditioned" the American investor to be buy-and-holders ever since witnessing the best bull market in US history (1980s-current). That is now changing!!

The places you want to be is gold, silver, agriculture, alternative energy, oil, commodities, etc. If you can short the market using an inverse fund (Rydex or Profund), you can probably do very well there too.

--------------------

The following two problems is what is driving commodity prices through the roof:

NAFTA is Problem #1. When US companies create and move jobs overseas, they create a larger middle class globally. Now that there is a larger middle class globally, we are all competing for the same commodities.

BioFuels is Problem #2. Our farmers are now putting less food on our tables so that we can be more energy independent. This is causing SOARING food prices.

Because of the FED and the WAR, that has exacerbated #1 and #2. When the Fed lowers interest rates, the dollar drops and all those middle class people that we've created overseas can buy our commodities much cheaper. The war has increased our deficits so much that other countries no longer want US dollars.
