Are we officially in RECESSION now?
after today's disappointing job report?

Curlyc+
No, just another swing dip.
Remember we aren't yet over the disappointing sub-prime crisis, and housing market collapse. Our dollar has sunk down to an all time low as gold and oil hits new highs.
The economy has shown very recently to be amazingly resilient.
I keep wandering what is driving it up at all, much less so fiercely in the tech sector over the past few years. I know it has something to do with developing markets. This is the way of bull markets testing new highs.
Many aspects of our economy have truly been in a recession for many years, but is not addressed enough by the media.
Hiring more oversees labor because it is cheaper creates lack of job demand at home.
This both helps and hinders our economy.
As a whole we are near depression status because of the amount of accumulated national debt and the average person not being able to save due to higher energy costs and all around inflation. Now the entire nation's nest eggs are being deflated.
With so many negative elements that have been around for quite awhile it shows how strong the overall economic sentiment is through the stock market not crashing long ago.

No.

The definition of a recession is two consecutive quarters of negative GDP growth.

We haven't even had one yet.

Bitstorm
no, we're not. Not yet anyway, we'll have to wait out for the coming interest rate decision to see how things will unfold.

some say the recession is definately coming if we're not already in it cuz they can't see a reason for stocks to rally anymore.... going to stay tuned!

The definition of a recession is one of the most misunderstood terms in finance.

US recessions are determined by its arbiter, the NBER. Therefore it's not a recession unless the NBER makes its decisiona and we will have to wait until NBER makes that call.

David R
Are you referring to economic or moral recession?
