At 36 years old is it worth starting a roth ira?

You should consult a financial advisor to see if a roth IRA or a regular IRA is better suited to your situation. With a roth, you don't get the tax write off now, but you won't pay taxes on it when you use it at retirement. A regular IRA you can deduct it on your taxes now, but then you pay taxes on it when you retire.

Also, with a Roth, you can take it out after 5 years without a penalty so it's a good nestegg if you'll need it for a downpayment or something.

I am 37 years old, I just start my Roth IRA three months ago. In your case, it is not to late. Let put it this way, you are 36 and you got about 30 before you retire. I am assuming you retire at the age of 67. If you put $4,000 in Roth IRA for year for 30 years with 10% year after year return, you will get $723,773.70!

Absolutely - it's never too late.

No, you should wait until you are retired. What does '36' have to do with it? Start saving and investing NOW! Spend less. Save more. Invest your savings intelligently. Retirement doesn't 'just happen'. You have to CREATE IT.

Best wishes.

Yes. But there is a point where it makes more sense to open a regular IRA, and get the tax advantages immediately. You still have over 25 years before retirement, so I think getting 25 years of compound earnings tax free is worth it. At about 50 years old, you might look into a Standard IRA.

Doctor J's answer is baffling. You should wait until you retire before starting a retirement account? But start saving now? Do you know that a Roth IRA is a savings account for retirement? And it doesn't make sense to open one AFTER you retire? Especially since the Roth doesn't give you any immediate tax breaks, like a Standard IRA. Roth gives you all the breaks later. It's definetely a vehicle for starting earlier.

Now if you open a Roth when you're 19 years old, whooo-eee.

mrgerbil
Yes, a very good idea.
